What most people over look is the labour to pay for to look after these systems as takes lot of time.

This is true certainly for grain drying because it's eating a lot of fuel all the time to maintain the target temperature at the fan. The quantity isn't to bad at around 5t/day but it's feeding it so it's very much like a mobile drier in that it needs you at certain times and you don't venture to far away from it!
For heating buildings it's literally an hour a day tops as it's using much less fuel once the temperature has been achieved.

Chip prices vary hugely in different regions. Only way to keep the costs down is to receive an artic load, and to avoid (like the plague) an installation that requires chip to be blown in to the store.
It is possible to switch from virgin chip @ £100-130/T to grade A @ £70-80/T but you will need a permit and maybe a flue filter to meet the permit emission requirements.
