Wheat rolling after freeze

Winter barley rolling will encourage tillering. If the ground conditions are right.

Edited to add: DO NOT roll at or after GS30 as you will damage the ear. Leave it for a week or two afterwards before applying any sprays that might affect a vulnerable plant. No dust means it's probably not fit to roll.

It certainly makes spring barley tiller. Tbh I don't think we've ever had the weather and soil conditions to do winter barley.
We ring roll s.barley straight after drilling, and then go back in with the FLAT 3TON roller once it has popped its head up. Don‘t be worried about damaging the emerging crop, you won’t, but the effect a heavy roll has on germination and tillering is amazing.

Typically we will roll spring barley twice post emergence with a Cambridge roll. About a fortnight apart.

The only difference is that it starts stem extension sooner. I had planned to roll winter barley in the past but the ground didn't dry enough in time before the ear was formed.
I know. I was interested why the poster I quoted thought it would be different.
