Wheat seed rates

What seed rates or seeds / m2 are you drilling wheat at or planning to drill at this year ?

We are planing on getting started next week

Depends on conditions and the situation. If kind land with a good seed bed and its good hefty seed then Id be inclined to go a bit lower. That said seed is cheap and buys some insurance against birds and slugs. Mid September I always reckoned on 325 seeds and add a sniff per week after that.

Had a batch of wheat seed arrive with a TSW of 61 ? Seeds per m2 will be less than I planned.
Despite requesting a call once tsw was known to amend order before delivery the merchant ignored that ?

Next year place an order with a merchant by telling him the acreage and intended sowing rate in seeds/m2. He can then bag up and deliver the right amount (to the nearest 250kg) along with a piece of paper for the drill man telling him sowing rate in kg/ha once the TGW is known.

This is how I used to do it. Customer knew to drill the lot and avoided any confusion or calculatorisms.

just for general interests sake - average sowing rates for wheat here would vary from around 35 - 60 kg / ha, depending on location, timing & variety. I generally plant at around 45 - 50 kg / ha, aiming for about 120 - 150 seeds / m2

on irrigation, rates around 100kg / ha are more common. But wheat is only a minor irrigation crop.

We used to be down at around 100 to 140 kg, for early September drilling, it worked very well, until the blackgrass got out of control.
Now later drilling dictates more seed.

Can remember putting cordiale in at 100kg a hectare in the first few days of September. Was an early linseed harvest and we disced it a couple of times and drilled straight away.

First wheats will be starting at 185kg/ha if I can drill this week, but that is looking doubtful. Second wheats will be 195kg/ha

so far not one person above has mentioned or taken into account the germination% of the seed they intend to sow . bearing in mind that the pass result for certified seed is only 85% you could if you knew it vary your seed rate up or down by as much if not more than any allowance for tgw
