The disadvantage of too high seed rates are from September emerged crops late October emergence need plenty of plants to compete with weeds
250 kg now and rising every week

Yup we drilled at 265kg on the 10th Oct last year into much kinder seed beds and most fields did 4t/a this year with some 5’s

Any pointers to what the seed rate ought to be for broadcasting seed and harrowing it in? My sums so far have been based on drilling with 75% establishment. Would 50% be better for broadcast and harrowed in? I walked some fields of clay that were disced and they are pretty horrid. The discing was done in good conditions but it's just a wet slop on top of the harder unmoved ground underneath. By contrast, lighter soils on unmoved ground are full of worm casts and would travel after a couple of good dry days. The odd patch of clay squelches underfoot but I accept that we may have to just lift the drill out of the ground on those small bits of the field and leave them bare.

Did you fit the double row of rear harrows or do you normally run batter boards then harrows? What happened to the rear window?? Why the cultivator? To reduce the surface trash levels?

Looks a nice job. Several heavy showers here today and fields that squelch underfoot, so no drilling any time soon. Do you think that the cover crop drew much moisture out?

This drill has never had the batter boards, we bought it 2nd hand. Cultivate to mix the trash in, with that much green it would still struggle to go through the drill especially if it had stayed damp. Would have liked to get a set of front discs and drill direct into the green but ran out of time. Very kind soil but I still thing the cover had helped dry the soil.

Eagle eyed on the back window, it had a coming together with the hedge trimmer arm and I'm awaiting its replacement. Got tbw ear defenders on, old school.
