Wheat seed rates

Very low seed rates then ?

Seem to be creeping up every year

Or is people like to see thick crops early because they look better? I prefer thin crop as long as it’s even

That’s where variable rate seed probably makes the difference ?
The table doesn't take into account % seed germination, so you can perhaps add about another 5% onto the totals

Just ordered a load more seed. Siskin due for drilling in the next 2 weeks up to 370 seeds/m2. Gleam land needs an extra week to dry out as it's heavier and has been worked so the seed rate has been increased to 400/m2

Same here, 0 acres at 0kg/ha ☹

Every time I look at the weather map it seems you're underneath a huge blue blob "the size of Wales" (to quote Rhod Gilbert!).

Not very encouraging with wheat prices at £130/t and potential for a 54% tariff on wheat exports from the end of the month.

Just worked that one out.....£200.20 a tonne would be the price an EU customer would have to pay!!

(slight tangent there, oops!)

What’s the tariff on rice? ?? , no seriously it’s wet enough to grow rice or ducks now! May diversify into a Chinese buffet?

We finally made a start yesterday at 2 hundred weight an acre, it would normally be 1.5 cwt/ac late September
If we manage to get some heavy land sown it may go up to 2.5 cwt

I don't know what that is in metric or seeds per m2 but this harvest the seeds were big so you need more of them !

Do you though?

We are always told wheat can tiller to compensate....

The weather is still quite warm so growth is fast. I’m hopeful there won’t be much slug damage.

It’s still reasonably early.

No harm in keeping rates high though.

My brother was a big fan of low seed rates, saying the tillering gives you “free plants”
Hmm, I hate combining thin crops . In fact, so much so, I prefer scrapping flat ones off the floor.
