Wheat silage/wholecrop

With the dry year we are having here we are looking at buying some neighbouring standing spring wheat. Best time to take it I think would be at soft dough, will we want to put it through the kernel processor on the chopper or what? Wheat silage this late on is a new ball game for us. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Soft dough is the correct time. Use a corn cracker on the SPFH. What you are looking for are grains that look whole but when you examine them closely, they should be split down the centre line and easily prised apart.
Don't forget an additive to stop the crop heating in the clamp and it also keeps the face cool.
Can feed out almost immediately if you are desperate but good to go after 3 weeks.

A kernal processor will not be a job on wheat anyway. Lots will be missed. There's a specialist cereal mill for that. Contractors here have separate cereal and maize Mills. If it's soft enough, then wheat is often okay actually, but barley at same.stage must be milled. Wheat grains will often be seen burst flat in the clamp when you feed it out.

what would a field of wheat/barley be worth per acre for wholecropping? Thinking of asking a few arable farmer neighbours if they would have any spare for me to chop

Obviously depends on how good a crop it is but you are looking at about £600/acre this year I suspect. You may be able to sweeten the deal by offering to plaster their land with muck/slurry, or even swap fields so you can put grass in and they can tear up pasture and put wheat in.
