Wheel nut challenge!

Sacrifice the alloy wheel is the best and safest way to go with this. You'll find one at a scrappy or ebay for less than £50. Using heat or excessive force on the stud or other nuts could weaken them and lead to a dangerous failure.

Get a wheel in hand and the use a blind hole saw to cut round the broken nut, then you can remove the rest of the wheel and turn the remaining piece of wheel with the broken nut using a stillson or similar wrench.

Locking wheel nuts on cars more than 5 years old is ridiculous. I've just bought a 13 year old XC90 and high on my list of thing to do are bin the locking wheel nuts.

This happened to one of my old cars. The locking wheel but split in half when I tried to crack it off. I ended up centre punching the stud and drilling it out with bigger bits until I got the nut off. I think it took best part of the day!

Throw a nut as big as you can in and stick weld the inside to anything and everything, don’t be frightened of the heat , ally is a conductor and will only get Luke warm, it will unscrew the outer and shear a bit off the stud, stud will probably be ok with a file up or fit new stud later, done loads like this.

Slightly different as these were bolts, made had a puncture Xmas eve on his Passat, changed wheel at side of road miles from home visiting in-laws, got home Boxing Day when he remembered he had left locking wheel but jack and brace at side of a1 somewhere! ? twenty minutes with welder, and disable the other 3 as well. No more locking nuts, who the f**k nicks wheels anyway???

Buy one of these for less than a tenner. Find the one that fits on the hole nicely but bigger than the nut. Drill through the wheel without using the pilot bit.
Then grind off the damaged bit that is now easy to get at.
Buy replacement wheel off ebay for £50 that has good tyre on it.
Quick and simple and sorts the slow puncture too.

As said before I'd be looking at undoing the wheel bearing nut under the centre cap. Hopefully you can get the dust cover off the hub centre ;) then pull the whole wheel and drum off complete , grind the end off the offending stud and knock it through.

this, years ago same same issue, was ford to, took drum off with wheel and you can just grind stud off job done.
