When’s a deal done?

What’s your thoughts .
ring up about a car one Saturday morning , was about an hour away Got address etc , Will set off now be with you at around 10 am , ok he says see you then , Throw dinner bag in pickup etc. Set off to look , pull up at this house nice drive posh gates type of place , see said motor in his drive , and a couple folk looking round it , Chap comes over , and says are you who rung an hour ago. Yes . Terribly sorry but some one else rung after you from next village and came straight over and he wants it , So sorry it’s gone . Would you be so kind to reverse out so he can get out and I have my boys to pick up from rugby shortly ,?so gets flask out pours a cup and gets a kitkat out ,
What you doing
Having a slurp and a biting on I said , and would like £75 for wasting my time ,
Sat an hour , after he got a bit revved up , did not get cash but had a nice read of classic tractor , while the chap got a bit arse y cause he could not get out

A scenario I get all the time. Man A rings can I come in morning.
man B rings shortly after says he'll have it, send invoice. There's no easy way round it.
if man A said I'll be with you in an hour then he gets first refusal with no consideration in selling it elsewhere.
sadly it's all too common that man A never turns up

it can get even worse: noted an ad on fb early morning, water browser for sale, very good price. My dad rings a chap and agrees to come over and take a look. While they (along with my mom)on the go and somehow lost searching for the village, I see fb record update that the browser been sold. Asked my dad if they bought it, he replied that they aren't in the place yet. Asked the guy politely why he behaves like that and he replied that many were coming and he doesn't bother too much.

It's a dilemma isn't it. What should he have done? Maybe arrange for everyone to come the same time next day and conduct an auction for it, or take the money from the first person that hands over the cash? What would YOU do?

The way I do: who calls first that one gets to see it first. Next caller joins the queue. If I want quick sale, I ask for quick visit. But not arrange a race so everybody wastes their time and is unhappy about it.

So if you had ten people wanting to see it you would make ten appointments spread over your day and hope they were all punctual and would sell to whoever wanted it first and ring all the others to cancel? Or would you arrange to see one every day for a week until it was sold?

Personally I would just explain that there were likely to be many enquiries and the first one to pass over the money gets it. Not quite sure how I'd avoid a race, if it were that desirable, except by making it less desirable by raising the price perhaps.

I would most likely would write down few first calls and then remove the ad for now. Then in the upcoming few hours first or second person would buy it. I do not make multiple appointments, I inform that someone is coming to see it and I will get back at him if it is not sold. Worth mentioning, I wouldn't sell over the phone if it was agreed for inspection with somebody else. I treat others the way I would like to be treated :)

I agree with you. It’s not simple sometimes though and depending on what it is, it’s much simpler if there is no great demand for it.

Dealers terms and margins vary enormously.
Went to buy a new Hilux off local dealership 8 miles
away best discount was £1500 ,told the boy it sounded
rubbish can I have some more and he basically replied "it's going to be a short conversation ,see ya".
Left it a couple of months rang the commercial department of dealer 40 miles
away and ended up with over £5k discount.
The funny thing is both dealerships are owned by the same parent company.
I have to drive by the local one most days and cant help a sly gesture.
Yes but when you have that sly gesture. He will actually be the one smiling as after you another walked in and didn’t even asked for a discount! All he wanted was a vat invoice . You can give 10 away at 100 profit or sell one at 1000 profit. It’s the dealers choice and 1 sale costs far less than 10. Forget servicing and parts. The sales guy doesn’t care

Some on this forum are well known within the industry as serial time wasters! Selling is very tough in this internet age. Be it tractors, wheat, land or animals! It’s great reading though.
I too have lost count of the times I’ve waited and waited for a customer to show on a sat afternoon for them to finally reply to the 10 missed calls and countless texts on a Monday morning . To hear them say “ something came up, not interested now” ...... I really do think we are losing basic manners of business from our industry. This is happening on both sides of the fence. It’s a sad situation

Actually I dont think he was smiling for long as I think he got replaced
as he wasn't hitting his targets.

When’s a deal done?
when you shake hands on it.
Yes 'avin' a laff of course . That was in the distant past , when a man's word and a handshake was his bond . I was always told that a deal was done and was , in fact , legally enforceable when there existed a written order with details of purchase written on it , was dated , and was signed by the sales rep , and the customer at the same time . A copy should be given to the customer . I had a case when I bought a New Holland Baler , I don't know whether the rep was a "Newy" or perhaps drunk , but we had got to a reasonable price , when , on an impulse , I said "Go on then , chuck in a tonne of string and I''ll sign up " He did too . When the baler didn't arrive , I spoke to the sales Manager , who said " we can't possibly supply you that lot on those terms " . When I pointed out that I had a signed sales document , with all the details listed , he had to admit that if I made them stick to the deal , they would , but it would sour relations between us , and lead to black marks if nothing worse for the rep. I had to admit that it was all unreasonable , and that I would forego the tonne of twine . They sent the baler next day .

It is very easy to sell if the salesman gives it all away and sometimes more. Some deep holes have been dug that way, as your story illustrates very well. Somebody has to dig out and fill that hole in at times, whether it was just an overly enthusiastic salesman or, as often happens, a complete failure of brain cells.
The over-enthusiastic salesman who promises the earth but doesn't and cannot possibly deliver all he has promised is all to common and a danger to any dealership business through loss of goodwill and trust believe it or not. It is very common.

The salesman's job is to sell, yes, but to ensure that there is a margin left in the deal that at least covers costs, at the very worse, but usually to leave a moderate return for the dealership. Not to give stuff away that results in a net loss or to fill the dealer's yard with overvalued unsaleable crap that eats capital. Or to give away £25 jackets with a £500 scraper or a free set of weights and two years extra warranty that he hasn't costed into the deal. Not to promise the customer these things and not tell his boss because he knows it isn't viable, only to have customers all over the place phoning boss to demand stuff that salesman promised but didn't dare mention to boss.

It all happens, believe me.

Currency makes the biggest difference I suspect but there must be more to it than that. The UK is traditionally one of the cheapest countries in which to buy tractors and generally cheaper than in the USA, yet when it comes to cars it is the other way around by far. I have no idea how that works or is justified.
Take a look at tractor prices here in NZ......shipped from Europe with an average cost of about $11,000 for a forty foot container...which can take two 120hp plus tractors and like for like still cheaper than the UK....The fact is, the exchange rate has a minimal effect in reality...its what the market will stand!

Agreed, had exact same scenario when I went to view a car about an hour away, even though he promised not too sell or let anyone else try the car till I had seen it, when I got there someone else was busily looking over said vehicle. He ushered me into the workshop and gave me the cars paperwork to look over.
Of course he sold the car probably using me as a lever to pressurize the other guy. Obviously I lost it a bit when told the car was sold, needless to say he wasn't too happy when all the service records and invoices disappeared over the fence in the wind or that any word of mouth warranty the customer had just received from the salesman wouldn't stand up for an hour.

Wish now I too had taken the time to make a piece and eaten it in his gateway.

Won't ever be back.
