When is something sold?

Had this scenario the other day. Just curious what anyone else would have done?

Man A rings up 9.00. Wants to come and look a machine and will be with me dinner time. Also indicates he'd like to take it away with him if possible

Man B rings up 10.00 says I'll have that machine, send me you bank details and I'll pay now and sent a lorry.

But man A may not show up at dinner time and because you told man B about it he is now not interested. And you have lost the sale.

We get this problem all the time. We came to the conclusion that nothing is sold until we have the money. To many times people say they are coming to look at a certain time and never show up.

Couple of weeks ago we had man A phone on sat morn keen as mustard and will come look midday Monday. Monday morning we had man B phone from somewhere 2.5 hours away and says he can get in his car now and be on his way. Explained to man B the situ and luckily he said he'd come anyway as he could still see some younger cattle instead. Man A never showed and we sold 40 calves to man B. Only had 32 for sale.

I would go with the first person and explain to man b that you have someone coming to look at it if he's not interested then it's his.
I would be very annoyed if I had arranged to look at a machine at quick notice and when I got there it had been sold .
The only way id have thought, I have been known to ring a dealer up about a machine and drive several hours to see it, I'd be very annoyed if they sold it when they knew I was coming. Not that the distance should make any difference realty it's a matter of principle.

I'd tell man B to wait till dinner time and if the other guy doesn't show up he can have it.

First person with payment
So in the OP's example that would be man B, yet man A could be driving quite a distance if he rang at 9 and wasn't getting there till lunch time resulting in a wasted day.

In the case of the OP I think I'd ring man A back and tell him there was someone else who wanted it and if he didn't show by 2pm it would be sold, tell man B the same, someone's coming to see it, if he ain't here by 2, deal can go ahead.
There's always the danger of falling between 2,stools but at least you've been straight with everyone.

If man b won't wait until dinner time, then he's probably not the sort of person to deal with.

But if you had a 5 hour round trip you would probably want to set off before dinner. Plus he bought 40 instead if the 32. Phoned in the morn, arrive at lunch and left us a cheque. Collected the following week. Just the bloke I wanna be dealing with

Not true in my case. I happened to be out that way on the Friday and it made sense to see the machine then. I was told beforehand about the other customer.

This is what I did.
I was getting good vibes that man A was genuine and would turn up.
Also I'd rather someone looked at it before buying anyway
