When to change car ??

It depends on whether you have mechanic abilities. My cars are bought at about 4 yrs old, low mileage one owner. I prefer those with reasonably priced parts and the slightly older japanese cars have a much higher standard spec than prestige marques. All my cars have run to well over 200,000 miles (not km) until they are economically unfixable. OH is the mechanic. If we had to pay garage fees it would be totally different. In that situation I might well lease but the monthly fees would make me cry.
The number of people who are concerned about my lost street cred is amazing but it doesn't matter tuppence to me what it looks like as long as it's reliable. The police do pull you over more in old cars though.
I prefer not to do debt but if I was buying new (if I had massive wealth) I'd go with the interest free credit offers and keep my cash in the bank. I couldn't personally accept the depreciation on a new buy but if that's what floats your boat it's fine. Where we spend our money or accrue our debt is a personal choice. But most of those same folk who are concerned about my lack of street cred are up to the neck in debt for their smart cars.
It would grieve me to be paying monthly fees for a car and having to pay repair bills too.

What's the general opinion on the most cost effective way to run a car .? How longs a piece of string ?
If you buy new £££££ in depreciation straight away .
Buy year old ,biggest depreciation hit avoided , then keep til it's dead suffering any repair bills , or change after 3 or 4 years so still has some value for trade in . !
Or lease ?
It's all swings and roundabouts . Repairs are pot luck as is the reliability of new or old .
Cost the earth to buy but worth nowt when you want to sell .
A few years ago I was changing my old pick-up, I decided to buy a 3 year old ex hire, it was 12k full spec, with 22,000 miles. Like new inside. Had it three years now, still done only 44 k miles, had it valued at 10k today, So, owning a newish truck, wont cost you too much in depreciation. I might keep it 2 more years then do the same again.(y)

If you can get 10k for 6 year old truck I would take it now

Its down to adverts for cars at £150/month, the plebs dont realise there is a deposit in front of that, which usually takes all the trade in value, after 3 years they dont have any residual value so have to sign for another. In the mean time the used car market is getting "fixed" by auction companies, and car repairs are ramped up to cover posh garage buildings... but everyone is happy it seems!

I'm sick of reading this sort of jealous rant. If you want to buy a car on lease hire why do you become a "pleb"? If a business wants to have nice premises why is it wrong to have a "posh building". It's not just on this thread. I read it all the time, even down to the choice of vacuum cleaner is deemed "showing off" by some.

Some of you have a series chip on your shoulders when it comes to people doing well, yet delight in posting about how hard life is....get a grip.

It isnt wrong to have a posh building, my grain stores would be much posher if i could get customers to pay lots more for wheat, or buy it on finance.

I don't think you have a choice in the matter when this happens.

Everyone will have different views on car buying. As I have said previously we have done contract hire now for about twelve years and it works okay for us, say mid range Astra or Golf roughly £250/month for a new car and no worries, just hand it back at two year old.

However if I wanted a second car as a runabout for my own use locally I would probably buy an economical old car with a year's MOT and no recommendations, for say £500 cash, run it for year and then see whether it was worth another MOT in 12 months. Definitely has to be the cheapest motoring by far, and I really don't give a toss about been 'seen' in a brand new or flash car.

However if you need a newer more reliable car for everything including the wife and children etc.then IMO contract hire gives safety and peace of mind; for not much difference in cost between buying a three year old car outright and renewing it every two or three years.

to some, a Ford Pickup is well beyond their means, in their eyes you may well be a show of. No different to you seeing a bloke in a nice new Range Rover and thinking "tosser" (not that you would). It's horses for courses. That's why I'm not keen on the "green eyed monsters" on here, forgetting they have a life style way beyond most of the population.

I'd say this country is awash with nice used cars, and with a bit of luck bargains can be had, ..we bought an audi avant 2.5 diesel 4x4 for a grand. already done us 14 months, no problem, just get AA or Rac cover to get it home!

He has a Ford pickup as well although it is 5 years older than mine. His wife drives a Mercedes estate. Mine has a Ford Focus:scratchhead:

As for Range rovers. Lovely cars. Wouldn't say I'm envious of the owners but I do admire there taste in motoring.
