When to cut new herbal ley?

Put this herbal ley in last autumn for silage. At what stage should I be cutting it? Was planning to cut along with the rest of 1st cut at next weather window but a bit concerned that will kill some of the herbs.

Got some high cut skids for mower.

I'd suggest letting it grow considerably more than that first. Why sow expensive herb seed only to knock it back hard by cutting it early?

Are you going to feed it yourself? If so it'll be interesting to see how your stock like it. Ours went mad for our herbal ley silage.

Think with this cold dry weather we have had a lot if crops will be better cut to encourage fresh growth now its rained. The chicory may bolt if left to long , you are aware of the cutting hight which is the main thing

Hasn't been touched since put it in. It's looking a bit yellow but guess that's because it's been cold and legumes aren't kicking out any n yet.

Put in stale seedbed after wheat.

Feeding it ourselves. We miss most of the summer rain and have got fed up of rye grass not growing in summer. So hopefully this will keep going and it helps that countryside stewardship paid for it 🙂

YES I liked the CS opportunity, might give it a go in my next application.

It looks nice to me. Dense + Diversity = Excellent. Your animals will like that.

Chicory will bolt in June if you leave it that long before cutting. Your rib grass is already in flower.

Your second cutting is going to be much more on a DM basis regarding yield. All the different species of plants in that mix will have optimal light to grow.

I would wilt it up as soon as possible, but it could wait another 3 weeks before it's first cut. I would also set my cutters at 4 or 5 inches above the soil/plant line so I am careful not to wack the crown of the plants to hard.

Leave it a couple more weeks, once we get some warm weather it will motor! I mowed a herbal ley field last year a couple of times and left a normal stubble height of around 3 inches and it didn't damage the lucerne, chicory or sainfoin at all.

I intend going round all my new HL this Autumn and get them properly analysed, and then again 2-3 years down the line, and see what is happening. They will get a tickle of FYM, as that is what I have here :)
I figured that I've taken away 100 tonne of fodder therefore I need to replace it with poo! Afterall thats what happens when it is grazed. Although I only put about 70 tonne of poo back.
