When to scan sheep

Triplets coming out of twins would be 2-3 out of 800 odd twins so not to bad, Over the years reading TFF I’ve realised there have been some absolute shockers!!! I can’t see them on the screen either but my wife had 19/20 right last year when she looked at the screen 😦

She’s obviously got ‘the gift’ then. You’d best buy her a scanner and a crate, then send her out to sit in cold, muddy fields all winter.... 👍

Have you been in contact with them since? It might be worth a phone call, if only as a reminder.:)

Was your guy last year on his first year out? We foolishly paid one of those one year, from a market flier my Dad picked up. He didn’t get to come back!:banghead: As posted above, I did let a lad do my earlies for two years, knowing he could take his time, and prepared to take a few mistakes, but I wouldn’t have been paying for the service.

Yeah sent them a message 3 days ago saying my neighbour has 50 pedigree texels too do at same time and he’s happy too pay setup fee for them moving .. still nothing .. another few days and I might have too start thinking about somebody else....

If it was his first year he never mentioned it... I’d of happily gave somebody on there first time out a chance but not at full wack... ... speaking of which what is the rate these days?

The one I hope Iv booked quoted me £35 call out, 60p for the first 100 then 50p there after

Less than that but numbers obviously bring it down

Pressure isnt on yet. If they are not answering the phone now God help you in December. Give them another chance this week but that is looking like bad form. Always enjoy this time of year when you have time to talk and keep people happy. It gets trickier when the wave comes but i cant stand not answering the phone carry on. Does nobody any good really

I’ve never paid a set up fee, but I can quite see why it should be charged for smaller flocks, as well as the slightly higher rate on small numbers. It often takes longer to travel and set up, than to actually scan small flocks.

50p is about the going rate though, although some big hill flocks wanting a ‘yea or nay’ could be on less. It’s good value as a management tool at that, and also a decent earner for those scanners that have built up a decent round through service & accuracy.

Last week of January start, least I won’t need too feed much corn this time [emoji23] i was totally expecting a lot of empty’s but the amount of singles has depressed me really normally I get 1/4 singles, 1/4 triplets and half twins ...

What did shock me was I bought 50 mules out the culls in August and they’d just been weaned and I knew I was risking it putting them too the tup when they’d not long had lambs taken off and every one of them was in lamb

The ones that were “empty” were they proper empty or were pregnant but needed rescanning? I had 11/130 that are due in march (left some sweepers with them in as my main lots start in March) and all 11 were pregnant but due March so best to rescan in January with my main lots to find out exactly what their bringing..

If they need rescanning I think my scanner would need sacking tbh because the tup only ran for 4 weeks and They were 96 days from the tups going in and as far as I’m aware that’s plenty even for the last tupped?

Will send them cull anyways and Buy a few in lamb ewes too make up the difference if I can find any due the same time

Ah yeah I know what you mean, mine were with the tup for 14 weeks, only the 11 wernt caught before mid October so we’re only 4 weeks pregnant being scanned

My lambing was over 9 weeks last year so as painful as it is having so many too cull it’s a sacrifice Iv got too make I guess too tighten things up

With the quad bike exploits, buying replacements out of the culls and buying in-lamb ewes, you certainly seem to enjoy the adrenaline ride.😲 I hope it all stays fine for you.

Do you think maybe the culls bought something in with them making the rest of the ewes slip there lambs? I ask because I had a bunch of 50 ewes (40 old Texel's and 10 mule theaves) that someone wanted me to look after for them. All 40 of the old ewes where in lamb at scanning but not one of the the theaves was showing in lamb, the tup was left in they and did eventually lamb in June and July. What I put it down to was either the old ewes having something the theaves where naïve to or toxo and the ewes had already been introduced to it.

Had that a few years ago. Lot of ewes scanned empty, got them blood tested and they were positive for toxo, left tups in and they lambed May, June. Thought that was more economic than culling them and having to buy replacements, with the added advantage they won't get toxo again!

Sometimes youv just got too hop on the rollercoaster and go along for the ride haven’t you [emoji23] ... I thought about running the tups again but then I’d never get back too 1 January lambing because this second batch would always want too lamb late and by the time I pulled them forward a few weeks every year they’d all be ready too cull... so while it’s a bit of a pisser Iv 50 very fit tex cross ewes some even pure Texels... they’ll probably do well in the culls and 50 culls buy me 30 in lambs ...
but then again Iv not seen any inlamb ewe sales yet they could be seriously on fire...

I scanned 5 pure texels on Saturday. Aiming for lambing second week of February. Sponged last year with reasonable success but someone told me a teaser (already had him) would do the same job.

Scanning at 20% would suggest otherwise 😡

At least they've already been running with the April lambers "just in case"

From 30 days after rams being taken out (or tups pulled off @Nithsdale Farmer). If you can
leave it longer that’s better but you don’t want the first ones tupped getting too far on or you risk missing multiples. If you leave the rams in for more than three cycles I’d do the lates/empties separately or twice.

Mate of mine scanned his pure Texels yesterday too and had half barren [emoji85][emoji85]
