When to sell ?

Hi we have decided to end the arable operation at our place this year and hence have a combine that will be surplus to requirements, so we think it would be better sold than sitting in the shed.

So we were wondering if there was a favourable time of year for doing so?

Thoughts please......

By all accounts most combine deals are done between harvest and Christmas as that is when new ones are ordered, and thus the good secondhand ones disappear fairly quickly from then on. On that logic, having a good used machine now could be worthwhile as it may be one of few.....though given the current year weather/crops wise it may be many farms have the chequebook firmly locked away.

On balance....probably no better or worse than any other time of year. A well priced tidy machine will always have demand no matter what the season.

Agree with all above - had a conversation with a dealer the other day who said exactly what Steevo has advised which surprised me a bit - however obviously not ideal for you at this time of year. Maybe try it on farmkit.com in one of our weekly auctions - we have almost a 1000 registered users now. Lots of free classifieds out there too - farmingads, farminguk etc - we are starting classifieds to run alongside our weekly auctions within the next month or so as well but at a huge cost of £1 a day (shed load cheaper than FW / FG casting no aspersions!) Cowabunga has it right too - spread the word as far and wide as possible as soon as you have made the decision to sell!

I think alot really depends on what it is and how old it is!
if you have a 2 year old machine then this timeof year might be difficult because you are in and around the new combines. If its a 10 year old machine then you coldl well be in luck this time of year, Or from now until harvest really.

there will always be someone looking for one.

Timing is crucial.
"In season" isn't always best.
If there are 100 machines on the market and only 80 buyers, stuff will be cheap.
10 machines and 20 buyers then seller holds the cards.

Get it advertised everywhere you can think of, decide your price and stick to it. Dont get involved with dealers unless you're in a hurry to sell.

If it's tidy it will sell itself with a few well chosen pictures in the right place

eBay for exposure to all and sundry!

Also list on Agriaffaires as that will open you up to the European farming market.

I sold my tractor via Agriaffaires, even though the mass enquiries came via eBay. The quality enquiries came via the former.

Stick it on here in the classifieds - puts it in front of a lot of farmers for sure

And it won't cost you anything !
