You were unlucky we had 20-25mm yesterday and this morning here in West Malling. It’s done the world of good. Had a dust cloud coming off the 750a Friday.

15 mm here and warm grass may now grow although it is too late.

  3. Sorry to hear you've missed the rain again. 2018 has been a really difficult year for us but we haven't suffered as badly as you. What rain have you had this year from April 1st @Badshot ?

    I've not recorded it.
I'm not too upset about it.
    The rape is basically OK.
Maybe 4-5 acres out of 100 iffy.
The wheat is emerging very well.
It's been a good year to get a gd drill.
Just need enough over winter to replenish supplies a bit.

You need some sheep. Been a good year to meet the neighbours, as I'm beginning to spend more time collecting wandering sheep than anything else.

The joys of having a farm that is normally surrounded with wet ditches, that is now surrounded with dry ditches !

I let a neighbour graze some stubbles, there's little grass on the pastures to be going into the winter.
Might have tidied up a few weeds, hopefully he got some good grazing for a few weeks picking up the wildlife damaged spring wheat.
The lambs went crazy for the hedges. Stripped every leaf they could reach.

Another week gone by with no rain and nothing in the forecast for us for the next week.
October is normally one of our wettest months but this time it looks as if it will only be 5mm!

Would any of the weather experts care to suggest when it might rain or what the winter will be up until Christmas?

Simon Keeling is suggesting that November will be cold, with the winds generally being from the north (between NE and NW) and generally drier towards the south than the north........there's a big blob of cold water out in the N Atlantic which is disrupting the usual flow of low pressure systems across the UK. I can see the south and east remaining in drier than average conditions for some time yet.

  11. Does the cold water in the Atlantic possibly relate to the higher temps furter North causing more melt water heading South??

Its sea surface temperatures I think, rather than the temperature of the ocean as a whole. Sea surface temperatures fluctuate all the time, they run warm and cold, and there are long term cycles as well. Cold sea surface temperatures in the N Atlantic were common in the 60s through to the mid 90s and coincided with hotter drier summers and colder winters, which coincidentally is exactly what we've had since this cold spot appeared earlier this year. The N Atlantic has been in a warm phase for the last 20 years, which has promoted damper cooler summers and mild but stormy winters. We may be beginning to see a swing in the cycle back to similar conditions to 30-40 years ago.

Don't worry it will balance out, when it starts it won't stop, if you've any metaphoric hay to make get it in the shed soon.

I don't want to be too much of a Private Frazer, but I was reading online about the current sunspot number (we're approaching the solar minimum in the solar cycle at the moment) and its effects on the upcoming winter, and the author happened to remark that the last time we had the combination of a solar minimum and a moderate El Nino event in the Pacific (which is what we are forecast to be moving into over the next 6 months) was 2009/10 winter, which in the UK resulted in the coldest winter since the late 70s:

Great news, we have had rain today!!
10 mm over night and a few showers since. You wouldn't know as the ground is still rock hard.
Everything is already going green and if it warms up at the end of the week we might still get some grass growth and the Stubble turnips might do a bit more!!
