Where can I check for chancel repair liability

Would it be lodged with the property deeds? Try the National Archives online. Your local diocesan office might have some information. PCC ought to have something as well. Has it got a connection with any of the Cambridge colleges?

My solicitor found one in the standard searches when buying a 1980s house on the edge of the local town. I opted to insure against it as a one off payment. Sorted.

Chance searches usually only reveal if property is in a parish which may have chancel repair liability and then insurance can be purchased.
It may be on land registry entries but not necessarily. Look at pre registration deeds which may show this.

You can check with the information the Land Registry have, some of these are detailed on the Land Registry Title of the property itself. There are also liability searches that solicitors are able to do for you. In addition, there is an ability to purchase insurance against chancel repair liability and these aren't usually very expensive.
