It's been wet and mild, other than barley nothing got rolled here ............................. yet no a single pellet used? not a sign of even the slightest bit of grazing

Just me ? or is this just what farming without OSR is like ?
Light land and no osr. Going back into osr has bought slugs back here

How do you rotate without OSR, 2nd Wheats here are 2t/a on a good year ? WW-WB- ?( OSR )- WW -S Beans is what I'd like to do, trying W Linseed in the OSR slot, but not all the OSR area to start with :scratchhead:

No slugs post osr either.
Few post beans and linseed ironically.

That's wheat into lots of cover/osr vols.

seen a few on wheat after beans but not enough damage to warrant any concern
after linseed and borage there is enough greenery to keep the few slugs happy

loose soil gives the slugs protection

since we have been notill i have only used pellets when we planted osr
last year all osr failed
we have not had any damage in wheat planted on the green after osr

the key with slugs is a firm closure of the notill slot which on heavy land using a disc drill is straight forward
earlier drilling and no seed dressing gets the wheat going quicker

ontop of this there are more preditors in a notill field

pigeons and rooks and other birds predate the slugs in the early morning
plus with no soil disturbance pre drilling the ground living preditors have a go at the slug eggs

If we forget last year... 2019 harvest our 2nd wheats where almost on parallel to the firsts, in some cases better :scratchhead: I find we usually have better results with second wheats than our Barley. Currently Wheat, Wheat, Barley, Sp Beans. though I try not to grow Sp Beans more than twice in 12 years... which leaves contemplating ORS for year 12 but eventually opting for fallow or oats... a new, reliable, profitable break crop which has the advantages of ORS without its disadvantages is badly needed! Maybe something that can be processed as a replacement to plastic perhaps or a maize that is ready for harvest whilst ground is baked hard in July :scratchhead:

I’ve not used a slug pellet here in 3 years and this will be the 4th hopefully.have grown rape too for last 15 years but dropped it for this growing season.we got some medium to heavy land in places, for norfolk and I allways get a fine seedbed and roll it down which seems to deter them.probably spoke too soon now having stated drilling again today into some muddy seed beds.we will see

Seems like it's just me then. No OSR at all here.

Got a few slugs showing up around here spotted when out walking today. DD 2nd wheat fields the worst, anything ploughed is clear of slugs and is growing away much quicker but that has all trash buried and the land walks drier.
