I'm looking to find out some history on a old stone barn we have on our farm apparently it used to be a separate farm so where would be best to look for the history on it?
Our county council has an Archive Service ( so I assume others have ) and have a huge selection of old maps. You can ask what they have relating to an address. They provide copies for a modest sum
I'd start chatting to few old boys around you... they remember everything. . And could point you in rite direction to find out more.. gentleman beside me.. in his seventy years.. love chatting him... he can remember things from years ago.. giving dates.. when things happen. .. unreal wat them people remember. .. I couldn't remember yerday..
Try old maps online http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/
I have used them a lot , but last I remember it was a bit of a pain to get the search started and scroll through different ages of map . Once you find the barn , just start going to older and older maps and you will see roughly when it was built .
