What’s the catch? Probably couldn’t even buy or build the farm buildings for that sum in the UK, let alone buy the house and the land too.
There isn't.
You buy the house , buildings and some hectares. The rest is on a secure long-term rolling tenancy 9 or 18 years ( 9 year gives better tax advantage for owner) , about 105 euros a hectare. Tenancys are very secure here.

I left in 2001 and have a neighbour from Yorkshire came here a month after. It hasn’t been easy by any degree but was a chance to get started with relatively cheap land. my neighbour was very home sick fir the first few years but returned to visit family and called two days after getting home saying he could never move back. Too many people was his main comment Along with nothing changing with his friend being in the same place as when he left. Personally I’ve never returned and only home sick looking at some of the pictures on here oddly enough. I’ve been luck as I married here and wife was local to the area so that was one less hurdle. I won’t return to farm there as I’ve got too much invested here to want to leave. I love it here but it’s not without its challenges I see what the uk has become with rules and regulations and don’t wish to deal with that. Hats off to you guys for stomaching it. If anyone has question concerning here I’d be willing to anwser.
I run across a few Brits, when I ask,"have you been back" its' always the same answer, it was great but "I could never live there again"

I came to Kenya as part of my first job nearly 30 years ago. I was actually plucking up the courage to head off to either the States or Australia both places i'd worked after leaving University. I had no intention of staying longer than three months but I got offered a better job and other opportunities opened up and I ended up farming for myself. My wife had a Canadian residents visa when I met her but didn't really want to go the rest of her family have ended up in the UK, Australia and the States but she's stayed and probably has the best life ( her family are doctors ). For the most part we've been short of money but the kids have had a brilliant upbringing lots of space ,lots of sunshine etc. My Dad wanted to move us to France when i was a kid but i was too frightened. If people are happy in the UK that's O.K but if you aren't head off somewhere else. This place isn't for everyone but it beats working for a living.

Mrs Bg often think we could have gone to Canada. It’s a country we both enjoy. I have family out there. Bg Junior has spent the last 16 months in Ontario dairy farming on a massive scale. He has loved it even during covid, he has been offered a permanent job but wants to come home to work with me. He doesn’t really enjoy minus 30 and lots of snow.

Junior has a friend who went to Australia for 6 months a couple of years ago, he is farming close to Perth now. Junior doesn’t think he will be back in a hurry. We hope to use it as an excuse to go and see some cricket 😁

We have spent the last 20 years doing our level best to get at least one of our offspring to head to Oz or NZ for this very reaon , but no joy.
I really think it is because they know they will see less of us living 25 miles away than if the decamped to Australia
😂😂😂
Son has cone close to moving to San Diego several times but it does not have the same appeal to me , I want an excuse for a warm winter 😉

All my mates move to Oz (trying not to take it personally) as the prospects there are 10x here for 30 somethings if you are brave. None have come back, from general layabouts, pro boxer, treesurgeon, and a couple of vets. Not sure about agri though, rough climate. Canada?
You are only buying a small holding and a tenancy on extra land though.
A proper tenancy on low rent

Is it? I’m not aware of the intricacies of French tenancy law, but I suspect priority would (quite rightly?) be given to locals in any disputes.;)

As to the prices, on most farms in that region where I’ve looked at the adverts, the stocking levels appear to about half what they are on decent ground over here. Is that a reflection of the productive capacity of that land, a lot of which seems to be at 1000’+, and with a continental (cold winters, very hot/dry summers) climate of course?

Yes, it’s cheaper, but certainly not for nothing.

I’ve posted before, but I sometimes wish we’d moved to France 10 years ago, buying a place there rather than taking a 20 yr FBT here. I’m not sure I’m as keen to take that leap now though, both of us being 10 yrs older, even though my lad will be leaving school next year.
If we were to move anywhere abroad, France would still be top of the (very short) list though.

Better bet...

What exactly is wrong with Limousin? Generally things are cheap for a reason. I'd never get my wife to move but I've been looking at adverts for farms in France for a long time now.

It doesn't look a bad grass growing climate.
