Where's the helpline for Theresa May?

Universal Credit claimants epitomise the 'just about managing' - often in poorly-paid work, usually raising a family whilst in rented accommodation, and always at a disadvantage in dealing with officialdom.

The UC roll-out has run into practical problems (poor admin, delays in payment, refusal to pay landlords direct, insistence on on-line operation, etc) that have created quite severe hardship in many instances. It is impossible for poor people to carry on paying their rent, and buy their groceries, whilst they wait six weeks or more for their claim.

Charging them 55p/minute while they waited to discuss their problems was never going to play well - although the Government has now been obliged to abandon the wheeze, the damage has already been done.

To add injury to insult, Jeremy Corbyn has today won his first (technical) Parliamentary victory over the issue.

In fairness to Theresa May - who invented the JAM demographic - she is making him look very competent these days: the Tories have the look of a party that no longer cares about those who support this country by their minimum wage labour.

This cannot end well.

have you apologised to @Danllan yet ? perhaps you should get your own house in order before criticising others
He is an old fraud.

I wouldn't say so unless I was sure.

I have doubts, sometimes, about others' claims: for instance, 'turbo' has claimed to have voted 'remain' which, to be honest, surprised me given his observations. But I don't know, and thus give him the benefit of the doubt that he is truthful. (I hope that I am not disappointed - it would be, to me, very sad if it turned out that my faith in him is mis-placed).

He's not.
If you can find a post where I claimed to have voted remain I will give a thousand pounds to cancer research , now I know you are just a wind up merchant, perhaps you arent even the real walter but have hacked his profile

Sorry, that's 'turbo' who claimed to have voted 'remain.'

I have edited the post to read as intended.

You kindly refer to 'the real Walter', which I appreciate: I write under my own name, everyone knows where I live, and that I am precisely who I say I am.

Many others on TFF do the same, and advance opinions that - although not always universally accepted - deserve respect because they are honest and plain-dealing. This is the basis of fair and sound debate.

And let's not forget that labour put the premium rate number for dwp years ago
This is a bit misleading, perhaps?

The Select Committee (esp Frank Field) criticised the DWP's decision to opt to make the helpline a premium line, in 2016, and the DWP decided to carry on with their decision despite the criticism.

Looking back, it was a poor decision - it was clear back then it was wildly inappropriate, and the chickens have come home to roost just as any practical person would have realised at the time.

The interesting question, I suggest, is why insist on going on when the Committee warned the DWP that it was a poor idea? The only answer I can suggest is poor Ministerial direction at the top.

Is it important? Well, maybe - the country is beginning (I think, you are entitled to disagree) to regard the Tories as bereft of sense, making Labour seem a practical alternative.

By this light, Theresa May is Labour's best recruiting sergeant.

Like the old bully's bona fides, we shall, of course, in due course discover the reality.

The reality can be 'discovered' today if you step up to the line and put your money where your mouth is.You are running scared now Wally, everyone viewing these threads knows it, you know it, but you simply aren't a big enough man to admit it.

If you are sure, you can make me pay for my misleading everyone, just name the stake:). Surely you would like to see me humiliated and lose £X thousands, wouldn't you? If you would it's easy and I have provided you with a method of doing so and of seeing a couple of good causes of your choice benefit. Use it, please, please use it.

And, while I am here, you used the phrase 'the old bully'; trying to turn this around, trying to change the subject? Tut, tut and wrong again on all counts; I am significantly younger than you and am tutoring you in the ways of righteousness, not bullying. Saying and writing nasty untruths about people could well be termed bullying; but holding unpleasant fellows to account for being unpleasant is not bullying, it's justice.

How would you term the way in which you have spoken to and treated so many on here? Not bullying of course, because Wally can't wrong, we've noticed that. You are a hypocrite as well as a coward.

And, neither myself nor @alex04w have seen hide nor hair of an admission from you that your encyclopaedic legal knowledge was lacking somewhat regarding the rather basic information about who is and isn't an officer of the Court. Many might consider that both immature and rude, just saying ;).

Come on, force me to expose my 'true' self, make me pay, you know you want to. I've a fair bit to do this morning, but assuming you finally will do the decent thing, I'll be back after lunch to get things started. :)

Not sure enough to take him up on his offer though. !

@Danllan claims to have been in both the army and the legal profession (I have no evidence to doubt either) so therefore he must be a "Barrack-room lawyer" I'll get my coat.:D

@Walterp perhaps you should answer some of the questions posed in your previous threads before starting any more. I tagged you in on a question on your “Will” thread, asking about solicitors as executors and the cost implications: there was no malicious intent on my part, I just felt it was an important issue. I think it’s actually quite rude to ignore genuine questions posed on your own thread, and I don’t understand why you’d want to.

He's just a troll. He never answers anything. I think he may be just a sad individual who likes creating mayhem on forums. He's probably got about 100 different forums going at once.

Problem he has got is that the longer TM stays in office, the worse JC's position gets and he knows it and is getting desperate now. Momentum is all about that and it will run out to reveal a shabby old communist hiding from a lady behind a glass door.

Well it’s looking that way: it’s such a shame when professionals won’t share their practical knowledge and experience with fellow forum users; isn’t it the whole point of a forum?

Oh, I certainly wouldn't bother with Walt. He can't even answer a simple question so is just here for his own comedy ends I think.

I don't think it is the 'point' of a forum as a forum has many functions and meets many needs but yes, if someone purports knowledge in a certain area, it would be courteous to assist if requested. Or refuse and give a polite reason. Even if it's 'I'm too busy'.

@Walterp interesting poll don't you think in the Times done by you gov.
Despite everything and let's be honest it's not been good the preferred choice as prime minister is..
Theresa May up a point from last month to 34%
Jeremy Corbyn down 2 to 31%
Undecided the rest.
Any decent opposition leader should be flying but of course he is not opposition he is the conservatives preferred choice as Labour leader despite his "momentum"

If Amber Rudd had a safe seat instead of a very slim marginal, she would be the front runner to succeed.
