Oh he was full of it for sure, but great fun nonetheless...Jeez, if only half of it were true!
but the back story was remarkable and the bullet hole in his shoulder kind of hard to fake!

Before I went to Oz, I'd been chatting with a coupla pals who had-separately.
They were talking about odd individuals they'd both met by chance up such and such a highway, or in such and such a pub, which I couldn't really believe...until I travelled such dusty empty roads.

Sadly Harry is no longer with us.
Did you get to see his place?
I met a fair few of the 'pioneers' back in Africa, and a lot of old PHs (professional hunters); at first hearing a lot of their stories, they sounded pretty hard to believe, and then you'd see the bite marks or clawing from a leopard / lion and realise it was entirely true. One fellow had a photo' of his leg with the knee and foot both going the wrong way, courtesy of a buff - just looking at it made me feel a bit queasy...

A bit more recent than some of them, but I knew another fellow who, while serving in the Rhodesian Army, had been on a mounted patrol when his horse was hit by a RPG... :wtf: it ended the horse's career immediately, and did him some serious damage too. But he got over it, had two gorgeous daughters and - I think - ended up in Texas.

We went out to see round his cave, used as a set in mad max
He got the grog out and took a shine to a talll blonde swedish bird who was travelling With me in our convoy.
When the other tourists all left he invited about ten of us for a private party, which was great, we just had defend the swede from his advances after he got sozzled
It was a bit more than a bullet hole in his shoulder, half of it was missing if i recall.
He fought for the germans against the russians so he told us
Crocodile dundee was loosely based on him i was told, he gets a mention in barry crump book too.
Coober pedy was the only place i got a decent sleep in oz as the caves were cool and dark

yup, that follows.

We stopped a bloke walking down the side of the road in town...'where would be the place for a drink....?'
Twas the man himself, and with a twinkle in his eye, he led us to some watering hole, and a simple request for directions lasted long into the night.
I was 'travelling' with a pretty fit blonde maid from ze Fatherland, who Harry clearly thought might be a up for it...can't blame a fella for trying eh?
We thought the pub stories all a bit far fetched, but stopped chatting with a couple in town the next day who said 'oh, it was you he was with was it? He's still out for the count'.
But they confirmed the tales, having been in business with him - weirdly, the blokes brother (or bro-in-law) subsequently became a long standing sawmill customer and pal of mine.
So we went out to Harry's gaff, and spent an afternoon on the above mentioned port.

Seemed to check out that a lot of Lithuanian(?) conscripts had to flee the reds after the war......and that Hogan borrowed aspects of Harry for his movies, although it didn't seem to bother him.

What is this horse thing of which you speak , Andrew ?

What do you make of the shenanigans going on at County Hall Morpeth at the moment? Do you still keep in touch?

I missed this. I am not being notified if anyone quotes or tags me, yet (2 days ago) I was notified that someone had responded to a thread I was "watching" and last was involved in in May of 2019.?????????????????

I can go a couple of weeks or more without logging-in, but when I decided to check out the notification I had received I saw 15 notifications under the bell, including yours.

Anyway, I do not keep in touch with local government in the UK - or anywhere else. Once party politics became involved I decided that "local" government is a waste of time because the Councillors (all of whom have inflated egos and now due to the Party mechanism think they are pseudo-MPs) follow the party line and frequently ignore what is good for the people. 50 to 60 years ago in Morpeth there was no politics involved. Everyone was an Independent, although I think most were right leaning, with the exception of one who stood as a Labour candidate. Nevertheless, when the time came (on a rotation basis) that he was in line to be Mayor he was unanimously elected by his fellow Councillors and Aldermen.

Come to think of it, I am sure national governments would better serve the people if there were no party politics and the MP was elected by all the other MPs. It would not take too long to have an exhaustive vote by ballot.
