Which 70's IH to buy?

I've got it in my head to buy an oldish tractor and tart it up. I have decided it will be an International and most likely a 574.
Is there very similar IH models I should be looking at?

Is the 475 with the Perkins engine better? (Not even sure if all 475 had a Perkins)

Suppose there are a lot of opinions, but the 574 or 674 were grand enough machines.Or you could go for an 84 series and still be in the 70's. The 474 was IH engined and the 475's were the Perkins equivalent. Totally gutless and too high geared if on the standard 38'' tyres.A low compression engine that needed valve attention to keep it starting easy. Better with the IH engine.
On the downside with any of them--worn gear levers/selectors,useless handbrake, worn quadrant levers, big transmission tunnel to sit astride.
Plus side--light hydro steering and good brakes and powerful hydraulics.

674 , never knew it at the time but was ahead of its time, good hydraulics, wonderful power steering and good brakes. As much as I hate saying, far ahead of the 5000 of the time.

Gear linkage as agrimax says may need tightening up

74 it is then, thank you for the replies.

No offense but I really never liked the 684. Had a couple of them from new, still have one of them but found the seat uncomfortable, always felt like you were falling off the front of it and the cab banging about was ten times worse than the door rattle of the 74. Just my experiences but enough to sway my opinion.

475 had a perkins in it which made it good . 674 was a good tractor but personally I spent too much time in one . Noisy things . I never want to see another , but nothing at all wrong with them

there is not much of mine original new cladding, thicker door seals, different seat, oversize wheels and tyres, I have a good few years of use with hardly any issues, I also have a 574 which came out of a factory it towed a welder around since new, repainted it in ih colours, hydraulics had never been used, feels like a new tractor

No it's not the 4.236, it is the 4.212. THis engine has a smaller stroke than the 236.

I've got a 475, a nice tractor but a bit gutless. They were good in their time but I wish they'd put in the 236.

My first new tractor when I started on my own was a 1971 IH 574, VFA811K. I was going to get a MF 165, but the IH was so far ahead of the rest my choice was easy. I collected my 574 from Lomas Tractors in Burton, as I drove it home I was the happiest and proudest man in the country!!! The only thing wrong with them in those days was it was so noisy in the cab. I had to wear ear defenders.

I swapped this tractor for a 685, it wasn't as good though. I had a JD 2130 next and after one terrible MF 3070 I've stuck and been happy with JDs.

Don't buy a 634 0r 614 they are shite . worst tractors ever made in history

Not sure about that, 32/4200 series has that mantle in my book.........but certainly not comparable to 54/74 series

454/574/674 best IH made (474 206ci short stroke motor gutless) ............anything after them was all downhill

If you don't like the noise, get rid of the horrible cab (y) &/or fit a D358 and enjoy the noise :)

When the 74 series tractors came out in 1971 they were streets ahead of Masseys. They stayed that way for a long time, IH sold a lot of tractors in the 70s and early 80s.

When the quiet cab came out in 1976 they were a good tractor. Masseys had Fritzmeyer cabs if I remember correctly.

I agree who would want to sit in an old massey , but they do go for ever
