Claas Montana 440 or jd t550 hillmaster.

Looking to get bit bigger machine, dealers say the above will do what I want.
Looking at 2012-16 age.
(Mine 96 plate..!)

anyone any thoughts?
Do you mean tucano 440? But if it’s an older lexion or a tucano it will be 6 Walker. I think the jd T550 is a 5 Walker

Go bigger than the dealer is saying. They always quote bigger output that is really obtainable in the real world. Having extra capacity is a great thing in a wet year.

If you intend keeping it for a while I’d get the JD, having run a Claas and now on a T series Deere I found the JD parts a fraction of cost of the Claas parts.
Personally I like the design of the T series, if you could stretch to a 560 you could also get prodrive, which is an option I think is worth having. The T series changed in in either MY 14 or 15, they increased the elevator chain speed in the feeder house, increased the diameter of the T series rotor and slowed it down and gave it a bigger sieve area that made operator input less critical. All of these improvements were meant to increase output, although I must say that I have been pleased with the output of my MY13 T 560.

Think they made the walkers longer as well, they reckoned about a 20% increase in output to the model we had.

Sometimes the bigger combine will be better prices here. Guys that buy the biggest have every option and when they are traded off the big growers won’t buy them because they want new with a warranty.

Yes, I could envisage a bit of that here in the UK market. People might be put off with a flagship machine because they realise the previous owner might have caned it. A smaller model might seem a safer buy. That said, I have worked with a few combine drivers in my time and I'd say all of them were very sympathetic with their machines and I'd definitely be happy to buy anything they had operated for the duration.

I’ve had two combines from Hutterite colonies and both have been faultless, usually very well cared for and only one driver. Anything minor is taken care of and not overlooked because it’s still running. A friend of mine bought a used machine from a local dealer, had low hours for the year but was worn out inside and never seen a grease gun. Cost him a pile of money the first year And even now it’s having its share of issues. I like to know where a machine is coming from before i buy if possible
