Which farming organisations do “DEFRA” liaise with?

What was good about the ELS was that it was easy to understand. You needed 30 points a hectare iirc and all the options had a point score. So you could work out what options would give you what points.

Is that so difficult to replicate? You could change the value of options to increase or decrease uptake on a yearly basis.

Can I also suggest a marriage value for options? For example wildflower strip within say 10 metres of a hedge or ditch could be worth another 10 or 20% and a bit more for both; which would help create varied joined up habitats.

Please God, NO!!! At least make it last for 2-3 years. I struggle to remember all the bloody options I have had, and easily confuse different scheme options... Old age possibly, or just too complex?

But I could not agree more about the necessity for SFI agreements to be simple to apply and manage and ELS fitted that wonderfully.

Doubling up on an Option makes real sense to improve it's "quality"... I have done this in the past (unpaid) purely to make an area more appealing to me (and the wildlife ) ;)

A question I would like to ask if we're still allowed Janet, is.

Are you looking for a 5 year commitment scheme or will it be more flexible/annual arrangement?

As an example, say I was to plant a crop of maize for only 2 years and would like claim for a buffer along a margin. In year 3 I plant it back into grass and no longer want /need a buffer as there is less chance of any run off to worry about.

So is there scope to apply for the buffer strip annually rather than try to fix cropping plans in year zero of a 5 year scheme?

The benefit to the environment being that I do leave a buffer strip rather than plough up to the edge and don't leave a buffer as it was to awkward/restrictive to apply.

remember Janet / defra are not here to interact with “TFF” they are here to engage DIRECTLY with individual farmers (you)

I may seem patronising but well done for getting “The Farming Forum”to a stage where “DEFRA” recognises it .
I would like to thank “DEFRA” for liasing with TFF.
"Ask me anything" isn't liasing, it is just answering questions isn't it?

How do we actually influence the SFI standards @JanetHughesDefra rather than ask how a particular standard works in relation to our farming practices.

I spent part of my weekend filling in the
"Defra Food and Farming Sectors and Trade Division stakeholder engagement – Sustainable Farming Incentive" form with suggestions with a deadline for submission

I don't see anything like this within TFF.
How do we as farmer actually properly officially engaged directly with our suggestions with Defra rather than ask a few questions for an hour.

You probably need to be on the nfu and rt approved farmer list so your suggestions will be in line with the grand plan.....

What is this grand plan?
Have you seen sight of it? I sure haven't
Is it still in place after the Treasury's bail out of CF because we are short of planet warming CO² , you know the gas they want to cut, sorry carbon dioxide that we desperately need to keep our lettuce fresh as it goes round the UK twice, in the name of efficency, to get to our plates.

That's why there is an SFI pilot section on TFF. To actually liaise. While limited to those on the pilot it is a start.

Given your location, you’d be better off asking RPW. ELMS will be for England only, our lot will be dreaming up, and consulting on, their own hair brained scheme.

Where is that hidden away to then?

If you are part of the pilot you will be invited. It has a specific purpose. Defra staff currently working behind the scenes to get it set up and ready. Think the applications will go out mid October or earlier to those involved.

I know @neilo but I've had enough involvement with agri-environment schemes in 3 countries to see some improvements that can be made.
At least DEFRA are consulting with farmers, I can't see RPW having this much involvement with the agricultural community regarding any future scheme.
RPW have probably already decided what their new scheme should be they just don't know what it is yet 🤦‍♀️.

So there isn't yet.

And it's only for those in the pilot and then only those that are TFF members, but neither of those two people actually know about it yet .

🤣
