Bazooka lodged severely in one field this year. Kingsbarn not much better. Too little yield, too expensive seed, can't HS, too risky on bushel wt. I'm going to grow 2 row from now on, and pick the variety on standing power.

There's some new 2 rows, Tardis,Bolton, bourdoux ect which are all on a par with the hybrids so why bother.

Yes they say hybrids compete with weeds but so does normal barley as for a start it can be drilled much thicker.

2 rows have caught up with hybrids not worth the extra cost I guess unless you want loads of straw
In my experience they don't yield any more straw, that was the main reason for me growing them but over the 3 years I grew them I never had anymore straw.
I found that by the time the grain was fit enough to get it to thrash well enough to get the awns off the straw would knock up to nothing.

Fair play. We only grew it once a couple of years ago and it did get really tall but the yield was poor, spring barley yielded the same.

Same here, the first year I grew bazooka it was over 4 foot tall and I was expecting massive volumes of straw and to be fair the headland we cut early did have lots of straw but we had a tank full of awny barley we couldn't get out!!!!! But once ripe there was no more straw than the other part of the field which was cassia and the cassia was better quality straw too.
