Not in the market for either but if i were to buy either 2nd hand which is the better built tractor?/more reliable etc

John deere look like tidy machines and are far more popular than fendt but fendt gets a good name as a premium tractor, why are JD sales so much higher?

Is it true that fendt no longer build their tractors themselves relying in agco to do this for them? If so are they really any better than a massey/valtra?

All breeds and colours break down. Most comes down to price and service reliability. So much electronic controlled and sensors now that service is becoming more important than ever. I’m a fix at home person and shy away from too much that needs a dealer to plug into to tell me the tires are flat.
Fifteen years down the road I think Deere will still be stocking parts so I’d lean towards Deere. That said agco are offering 17% discount on any piece of equipment now if you already own an agco product.

Interesting points, lot of people speak well of jd service, lot of these 2nd hand fendts online seem to have either a new engine or transmission, mabye that makes them a better buy 2nd hand?

Good service depends entirely on the dealer. Now they are being forced by the manufacturers into huge groups, service in some cases, is slipping. Some never had it anyway. Beats me why they've become so anti customer!

I am probably not unique but for the last 20ish years I have continuously had both makes on the farm. I am currently sat in a gen 6 724 which is a fantastic place to be. Also have a 6250r running which is also really good. In all those years i’ve taken a 716 to 21000 hours having bought it on 9000 and not spent any money on its gearbox. I have spent more money on repairs to 1 gearbox on a JD 7930 than the 7 fendts i’ve owned added together. However that JD was a 1 off. The 2 6250 tractors i have had have been really reliable, they don’t have the easiest life here but suit what i want them to do perfectly.

I would say JD reliability has possibly improved. The gen 6 Fendt does like an error code, this one has only done 3000 hours and it will have to do at least 5000 before i think of changing it so we will see how that goes. The 2 dealers are both excellent and willing to help.

So to answer @Bossfarmer the only difference is personal preference. I like to drive a Fendt my brother a JD. If the deal is right for someone deciding between the 2 there is no wrong answer.

John Deere sell a lot mainly because their marketing department has been extremely proactive for the last 40 years.
They also make a decent product with decent backup.
Fendt make a very good product but their marketing was none existent until AGCO got hold of em.
See the connection?? Americans , sell sell sell !

Interesting so neithers really superior over the other

work shops are all full, dosen't matter if JD, Fendt or Claas or Deutz... and not only for oil change.

prices for grain are down (+bad harvest results) and blue tongue disase with cattle and sheep.

2025 could be a hard year for investment (farm maschine) industry

Pfft.

None. Modern tractors have FAR too many knobs & buttons and sensors and stuff you don't know about let alone need.

FFS, I got in to our JD155 yesterday as it had the tedder attached so thought I would show willing ... and it took me several minutes to find out how to lift the implement. Tiny little toggle thing among all the rest of the dials and snizzle.

it’s very dealer dependant re service / back up

not a lot to choose re quality or performance of product but a big difference in cost of ownership in my experience

you would need to own 1 of each over the same time period shifted at similar hours to get an accurate comparison as periods of high machinery inflation can distort 2nd hand values, if anyone has done this let me know

i see a lot of fendts 2nd hand still worth good money online but im told that if you simply trade them in for another the dealer doesnt give you such a premium and the new ones are crazy money now

i’ve done exactly that

as i says the fendts were cheaper to own ( i know you really don’t want to believe this, but believe it or not i do run a business, i don’t guess stuff or do any of it for fun !) 🤣

i’ve done exactly that comparison in the past - not just with JD / Fendt but several other brands as well

that’s why we run fendt now - i very rarely drive them, they could be Zetors for all i care beyond £’s and ability to get the job done
