I'd like to know how to ensure my internet doesn't suffer such terminal issues! In fact, I'm sure we'd all like to avoid a situation like he is experiencing from happening in future.....

I doubt that Gator's problem is due to his ISP, it's more likely an openreach (landline) problem

Good to have a backup ISP, even if that's just a 4G USB stick for a tenner....
