Which Magdrill?

Hi all,

I’m considering getting a Magdrill.

Just for occasional farm use so doesn’t have to be top top spec.
I do however want a quality one.

Can anyone suggest a suitable one? I’ve been told to avoid variable speed (I don’t know why) and stick with a regular two speed model.

Snap Mac has done everything we’ve needed including drilling rear rims.

Make sure you have decent drill bits, money better spent than on the drill itself.

I had the same dilema a few years ago and after sifting through the threads on here I got a Rotobroach panther off Magdrill.com. Plenty of people recommended them.

It's for occasional use building sheds etc, the variable speed is useful for different sized broaches and it came with a chuck for normal drill bits. The oil feeds through the centre of the broach which is supposed to help them last longer but it can be a pain to setup if constantly changing positions so I use a squeezy with soluable oil as well.

I got it with a set of broaches to get started.

We have a rotabroach puma and can't fault it. The bits last forever too. Something to consider is bigger isn't always better as it's sometimes useful to have a smaller machine to get in tight places

+ 1 for evolution, I got an evo42 about 18 months again and it’s faultless and it’s drilled a lot of holes! Really can’t knock it for the money, 50mm hole cutter no problem.

+1 for Evolution 42. Not as good as some other makes, but for occasional use it earns its money, just as important is to use decent cutters & look after them.

How does it compare cost wise with the likes of the Rotabroach Panther?

Slightly dearer than the Panther but if you chose the minibeast 35 you'd be similar. The HM50 I chose for its two speed option so I could run cutters slower and extend the cutter life, I borrowed a mates alfra rotabest and couldnt believe the tips lasted so long spinning that quick. But it too was a good tool. It's more equivalent to the Rotabroach element 50 and price is similar. I just like the fact the company JEI are great to talk to for advice, local and stock cutters/machines so if you are stuck they could soon get you sorted via a distributor or themselves. I think they said everything was manufactured in house and used German motors? But the quality speaks for itself and I prefer to buy local where I can.

When you are drilling like that make sure you have a safety chain fitted. Broke a drill and cutter once when it fell due to a power interruption......................................................

Whatever you go for, dont get a massive one if you are never going to use it to its full potential. I've got a unibor eq100 that will cut upto 100mm hole, really good mag drill. Only problem is, for 99.9% of the time its far too big and clumsy, so it hardly gets used.

Bought a evo42, a couple of weeks ago and i love it, small, light, powerful and cheap.

When you are drilling like that make sure you have a safety chain fitted. Broke a drill and cutter once when it fell due to a power interruption......................................................

I put a big G clamp over it as there was nothing to put the safety strap round.

Would you the Evo42 be ok to go up to 55-60mm diameter through 8mm plate? Not regularly of course.

I’ve cut quite a few 50mm holes through 6mm with mine and it never even flinched, plenty of cutting fluid and going steady. I’d quite happily go bigger with it although I think 60 mm may be the biggest that would fit between the chunk and the mag mount although I haven’t measured it.

EQ100 swivel base there hard work with a fixed base!

Still no good to carry up a ladder though
