Which tractor please.

Good evening. Am new to the forum and also to the world of tractors. I’ve been in haulage for the best part of 15 years but come out of it pre covid.

I am looking at the idea of buying a tractor and trailer for moving my plant from home to a site I will be renovating over the next few years, mainly 9-13t excavator and some lighter machines. I will also be moving a lot of stone and muck between.

the reason for thinking about buying a tractor is I think it will be more versatile for the job and saves me having numerous vehicles on the road.

I was looking at a NH t7 and a MF7618 and a 6490. It will only be moving the above and won’t be having any farming attachments on it. I have been told the t6s will be too small and no good for the job by a friend, is this correct?

i have a budget of about 40k plus the vat if anyone has any recommendations. I am sorry to sound so vague but I thought this would be the best place to ask advice.

thank you

JCB Fastrac as only tractor that really qualifies under the new rules from April 1st 2022 due to all round disc brakes and full suspension.
New rules will be no fun. White diesel for everything apart from agricultural use and use of diggers for strictly agricultural use so definitely no site work even for agricultural.
Only tractors excempt will be farmers hauling own digger for own use to own land else fines will be given.
I personally can see Fastracs becoming very very sought after but also hgv licences and operators yards are also part of the course.

Probably be a lot moved at night🙈

Doe it have to be your own digger ?
we regularly hire diggers for our farm work and move them between blocks of land with tractor

Buy the t7 with range command. Make sure damper plate, 50k bearings of over 5K hours and head recon of over 8k hours are done. Flawed enough but best of the two

I often hire a digger, do the new rules mean it will have to leave the farm full of white?
Will be a PITA as I don’t have a white tank.

Bg
Surely VOSA ain’t gunna start dipping plant being moved on a trailer. And I doubt many 360’s get moved past VOSA testing sites under their own power ??
Nest of vipers !!!
Diesel Engined Road Vehicles (DERV) Surely the road duty cannot be evaded whilst off-road.
I can see this being tried in the courts.
“Rebated oils
If you’re a fuel producer or distributor, you may be able to pay lower rates of duty on rebated oils (known as controlled oils) such as red diesel and marked kerosene. These oils are not to be used as road fuels.”

The above quote only suggests that rebated fuels are not to be used as ROAD FUELS. A digger on the back of a trailer being towed by a Derv fuelled prime mover cannot be considered to be a road vehicle !!! FFS.

Ignoring all of the legal issues - I'd recommend a Fastrac for this job. One with a manual Eaton box would be well within your budget. They handle the punishment of heavy road haulage better than anything else in my experience. External disc brakes, properly integrated air systems and all round suspension will be familiar to someone used to the trucking world IMO.

are you sure about the fastrac thing as they do not meet the emission rules to be tax for haulage work , taco, Mot , etc

which do you recommend then chaps? The 7s? Will 6s be too small to move a bail trailer with 13t? 👀😬
The issue is not power, more a case of having something heavy enough on the front to hold it all.

I big T6 would pull it about no bother, but a T7 would be a better job I'd say. Depends on terrain and distance really and what other work you have in mind.
If its a New Holland you want I'd be trying to pick up a T7 with range command gears and air brakes.

Never often hear somebody complain about having too big a tractor!!
