Which will cause least compaction?

As far as I know and as Clive & Serup have said, axle load is the real determinant of soil compaction. Large footprint tyres will help surface rutting but if the axle load is high then the compaction is just sent deeper in the soil profile.

The old thumb rule was no more than 6tn per axle I think.

As someone once said, a Quadtrac has a low surface pressure due to its large foot print, a 5tn smaller tractor might have narrow tyres and more surface pressure. Which would you rather drive on a 6tn capacity bridge?

The bridge analogy is nonsense.
