Is there any attempt to 'censor' our history? Those attacking Edward Colston's statue weren't trying to cover up his actions, they wanted to explicitly focus on history. Most of us probably know more about him now than we ever did.

They should also be looking at criminal damage charges.
I note you didn't question the censorship of our heritage.

The censorship / re-writing of our history is an aim, and some successful attempts have already been made: there are some idiots who believe that British people went to Africa, rounded up and enslaved black Africans; there are others who won't accept that all the slaves taken across the Atlantic were enslaved by black Africans and sold to white traders. These truths don't fit with the preferred narrative, so some think they must be either ignore, removed or over-written

Criminal damage is a given, as is affray and riot, all that's needed is a police force to enforce it.

And Boris's water cannons, wonder where they went?

I have learnt a lot by following these threads and researching some of the content. I have always been curious about the incentives for exploration, development of international trade and migration. The effort put in and the dangers faced are extraordinary if you believe that explorers like Livingstone, Stanley, Park and the polar explorers were operating purely to satisfy their own curiosity. They were of course sponsored by religious factions, governments and private business to further their causes. What ensued was not always humane or ethical and here are people today trying to dismantle, obliterate and rewrite history because it does not fit with modern values that they perceive to be correct.
They should face up to the fact that this is the world we live in, by all means work towards making it better but don`t erase the past.

Supply and demand dictate price and requirements.

The white traders created the demand for slaves, they also provided the haulage which saw thousands of slaves die due to ill treatment.

By your logic we should not blame Eastern European traders who create a demand for GPS equipment, tractors and quads, which are stolen from British farms? Maybe we should return all the stolen goods recovered from travellers camps, back to the travellers, as they were only creating a demand, which should be regarded as acceptable by your reasoning?

I agree the police should look through the videos and prosecute anyone guilty of criminal damage, affray and riot. That chap who urinated on the police memorial should be given 10 years

Completely agree, but we need someone to stand up to them. The police are understandably scared after what's happened in America.

It has to be the police and the courts that deal with this, no one else. All these groups are infested with "agent provocateurs" who aim to cause as much instability and polarisation as possible. Paris saw it in the "Yellow vests" with numbers of foreign nationals and other dissidents coming to provoke the demonstrators in the violence etc.

The Colston statue was erected in 1895, some 200 years after he himself died.
So who was rewriting history or turning it into something it wasn’t? Likely the Victorians who always looked back with rose tinted glasses on an illusory age of grandeur and chivalry that never was, unless you were at the top.

Melt it down and make it into synchromeshers where is will do a damn sight more to promote smooth interaction than it does now.

Let it’s permanent removal be an acknowledgement.

it’s so easy to dismiss all others grievances living and working where we do.
Melt it down.

No mention of the three way trade and its importance on the expansion of commerce for the good of all?
Foggy memories of the teaching of the trade winds triangle at school.
Trading with the world was dependant upon reliable, prevailing wind patterns back in those days. Not a keyboard supported by non renewables.
Taking folk who were already enslaved, from one location to another, was only one part of the story.

Its probably been mentioned elsewhere on forum but what do people make of those from far right protecting statues?

Personally I support them. Some of them are meant to be football casuals, who normally meet up at weekends for a fight.
The high ranking football hooligans would have had nothing to do with yesterday in London. They would have been far to savvy to realise that having a good ruck in an area which a high concentration of CCTV, filming police and journalists would be a one-way ticket to a banning order.

Those that were kicking off yesterday were right-wingers such as the EDL which attach themselves to football clubs. And what they were there for was nothing to with protecting statues.

A image from yesterday that will always stick in my mind is that of a black man carrying a bleeding skinhead out of the crowds. Good and bad on all sides as somebody said above.
