Who do you insure with?

I think the trend here is they are all competitive IF you are new business

if you renew no question you could pay less elsewhere (often significantly).

this is getting like electric and gas where we have to change suppler every year (in the diary) to get the best rates

Certainly is.

Mad (and sad) world we live in now. Trust is worth very little indeed.

Makes quite a bit more work.

You’d think a broker would be helpful in this situation.....but like land agents they have their best interests at heart rather than yours. It was suggested to me they can make 30% cut every year....whether they switch you or recommend your policy is “still competitive”.

Been with Caleb Roberts for years premium slowly crept up , so tried NFUM , told agent wouldn't divulge any figures and wouldn't change unless a big reduction in payments. Result was a 30% saving, speaking to Caleb Roberts rep all he could say was he didn't realise NFUM were so competitive. It definitely pays to shop around if you are loyal it will unfortunately cost you , whoever you are with.
We still shop around every year but haven't yet beat them . Perhaps it's because they know we are going to shop around.

Is anyone finding NFUM dropping their price at the first sign of healthy competition? Shouldn’t they give that rate to all of their customers not just the ones who get quotes?
This is why I left NFUM. I told secretary I had a quote and he had 1 chance to give best price. His quote was £1600 above alternative quote. When I said i was changing he immediately knocked £800 off.
This cost him my membership as well.

My lnsurance is the biggest expensive l have every month, nfu, so pay out no bother but its very expensive, there is a guy, brown from Stirling who do alot of farm work but maybe more bother than its worth changing.

you had a recent claim, when you say 'they pay out no bother', last time my late father claimed they were right tools hence why we swapped.. and saved!

insurance should be checked every year, and gone through carefully, if you don't, you will miss out. Quotes are lower, because, sometimes, cover is reduced/altered. I got caught out, old l/rover, and old tractors, reduced to 3rd party, can't remember how much l/rover was, but the 2 tractors were £15 each, but the pig was, box behind l/rover not covered either, just to knock a bit off the final price.

I changed to Grosvenor Insurance about a year ago. Great service so far from @Kimberley

After not having made a claim for donkeys years with the NFU we have made two since swapping to Grosvenor. Both settled quickly and very satisfactorily.

Would certainly recommend Kimberley so far. Hopefully the renewal won’t be sky high!!!

Well worth the bother in my experience ! Swapping from NFU to F&M 3 years ago halved my premium. I have had just as good service from them as I ever did from the NFU.

Quote from Acres I have in front of me this week looks like knocking more off again so likely to change

It's the way forward. My insurance has dropped pretty much every year for the last 4-5years, each time I have swapped, but got better cover (more buildings, tractors etc. added on).

I'd highly recommend getting another quote before renewal @Cab-over Pete - too late when you're 10 days before renewal if the paperwork drops in the doorstep.

I've been told (by insureres) they don't like you shopping around too much - the talk was it suggests you are a red flag. A bit like a farmer who uses a different contractor each year I guess. Certainly brokers seem to take the same view. I struggle a little with this though as it's not exactly an impartial perspective.

Clive - IIRC Acres and F&M are both brokers.....so surely they would be approaching the same 4-5 underwriters (Rural, Aviva, Red Sun etc.)? As I understood it a new broker can't quote you against your existing underwriter. It does show though that paying a broker their cut to "shop around" for you is rather counter productive.

Insure with NFU, been with them for about 4 years now. Just had a quote from County Insurance and that has come back at about 1/3 more expensive than NFU, so will stick with them for this year. Will look for new quotes next year just to keep the NFU on its toes. Tried F and M a couple of years ago. Came and got all the details, but never came back with a price, so was not impressed!

I guess its a case of all brokers are not equal and some maybe shop around more than others ? or maybe work on tighter margins?

We are paying significantly less for our insurance today than we were over a decade ago now ! I can't say that about any other input we buy!

I don’t like to swap around. I have had a couple of different insurers approach me in the last couple of months so may get quotes, but as long as Grosvenor are somewhere near I will stick with them. If they are way out we may need to have a conversation!
I value good service above cheap quotes.
