Who is going to kelso.

It’s just the same as buying limmy bulls. Three quarters of them are ruined before the sale. Look at the harder done types with less fat cover on them they are still there.
Texels are the worst example up there, rolls of fat on the inside of the back legs
There's over done and there's over done.
I know plenty of breeders who will feed well and turn stock out in strong condition, not ideal I know, but they do so with feeds containing plenty of fibre and nothing too starchy.
I know others who feed hard on fattening type blends and their stock a screwed before they are sold.

I'm always wary of bulls that are in poorer condition at sales as they are usually fed hard but are just hard fleshing sods.
Plenty of people use the excuse that they don't eat much or that they don't get much, but very few who attend society sales don't feed ad-lib.

Yes I agree.
I was referring to the leaner type of tups

I'd actually say you might get better value for £££ buying a Cheviot at Kelso than Lockerbie...
Have bought an odd Texel and BFL at Kelso in the distant past but was always disappointed with the NCCs. I'd say most, if not all, sellers definitely take their best to Lockerbie, most of the ones at Kelso had faults to be found but maybe we're just fussy.

I quite want to go to Kelso seeing as it's all outside - throwback to the early days and one to say "I was at"... but I've been and done Kelso many times the charm isn't what it was. I wouldn't be buying, either - plus I've got 200 ewe lambs needing worked with tomorrow and Friday to keep my out of trouble!

They don't sell cheviots at Kelso

Aye there's a difference in quality, wasn't suggesting there isn't.

But there are bargains to be had at Kelso - the quality is at Lockerbie, and you definitely have to pay for it

My personal feeling is that the tups we sell have to be transitionable, that is they can adjust to any bugger’s management (or lack thereof). That means living on pasture not concrete, fed twice a day not ad lib, and fed to balance not replace the grass they’re on.

Even that would be anathema to some of you miserable gits on here.

Agree, there's an article in a certain farmer magazine about a certain breed of tup at kelso and the boys saying his sheep arent well done too and get no preferential treatment, which is complete bullsh*t as his tups get fed 3 times a day on cake, are as soft as shite and have bad feet which he continually treats, he says he culls hard but keeps all the problems of the day and has terrible lambings

A bit cheeky but would you like so say where broadly you are in the hills? We are breeders (sheep and cattle ) our highest hill is 1100ft we don't cake or feed cabbages etc but we make decent returns. @Nithsdale Farmer we are a Blackie place as well as Cheviots. we push none of our stock. they have to prove their own worth. Some people buying are looking for size and power others are looking for skins, we select what out buyers want, the dross goes to the fattening but there are still plenty of Blackies on the hills around here. The big boys have fecked the job for the moment but when was the last time you heard anyone singing their praises even though they walk through the markets like Gods?

some of us worked that out 30 years ago lol , cant sell at Kelso or Builth though , Had a call last night (wilton today) long time customer cant go but left me with a big reserve option for my best 2 unseen , that call was worth more than dragging stock half way across country and getting beaten down because they arnt stuffed like the rest on offer .

I bought a tip last year out a shed with more hoppers than tups , when selecting I though your mad but I still bought , it didn’t work ! They fixed me up tho , this year I’m attending a on farm sale of grass fed only rams to hell with this pumping them with feed it’s ridiculous.
