Who is going to kelso.

some of us worked that out 30 years ago lol , cant sell at Kelso or Builth though , Had a call last night (wilton today) long time customer cant go but left me with a big reserve option for my best 2 unseen , that call was worth more than dragging stock half way across country and getting beaten down because they arnt stuffed like the rest on offer .
Like I keep saying though, other people feeding is what gives your marketing edge, if everyone went 100% forage reared you become one of many.

I bought a tip last year out a shed with more hoppers than tups , when selecting I though your mad but I still bought , it didn’t work ! They fixed me up tho , this year I’m attending a on farm sale of grass fed only rams to hell with this pumping them with feed it’s ridiculous.
At least it proved you were right in the first place.

So many are at it, I know some who are keeping Blackie rams on hoppers, which is madness.
I generally only buy from someone that I know and have visited, or just breed our own.

That's very likely in your part of the world, but there are some horrific grassland managers over here, some are still treating rotational grazing and paddocks as a new thing and some haven't even gotten that far yet, but plenty of them have good stock.
I'm sure sure that's true but I was speaking in the context of the hypothetical situation of most people producing pedigree stock off forage.

Always wondered what is best, buying from someone with the same type of farm ( or harder) that feeds them a bit or buying forage fed from three hundred miles away on a much better farm and climate?.

The best is to breed your own.

I don't get why more don't do it. My Texel ewes are treated no different to the other ewes, and the resulting tups are mostly better than what I'd probably buy - because I can't be outbid!! They're also not pushed at all

not necessarily right because its an art picking a type of stock ram that will grow and do on even poor pasture , at the moment in the pedigree world its just buy the biggest with a bit of shape and feed company can make up for any deficiencies , its not just about forage feeding its about type . and at the moment the type that sells in kelso etc doesnt make the best fat lamb producer ie % offspring graded without creep . If everyone went forage it would still take decades .

disagree. Nobody I’m aware of deliberately picks a poor tup. The purchasing choice is always ticking boxes on their criteria.
