Pot/kettle?
Anyway back on the topic.
Why is it so hard not to spread slurry between the dates or indeed to manage the slurry to maximise nutrient uptake rather than leach it away. Crap infrastructure? Rubbish unsuitable systems.

Pot/ Kettle for you as well:whistle::whistle:

Pasty is implying that the rivers in Devon are awash with slurry from farmers who couldn't care less but the reality is that incidents now of large volumes of slurry getting in the river are few and far between ( thankfully ).

You hear more story's now of the water board letting raw sewage straight into the sea when there is heavy rainfall than farmers polluting the river with slurry.

We already have this closed period under the nitrates directive in Ireland and around the midlands it's a 3 month closed period. Not a long time in fairness but it does result in land been spread when conditions aren't right just before the cut off date and as soon as the spreading period re-opens in Jan the country is blackened with slurry. I've seen fields covered in the mornings and then it spills all day and by evening you wouldn't think a tanker had been out at all. Under the old way most farmers with more then 2 brain cells wouldn't be out on wet land or in the spills of rain but now we're compelled to store it for months and usually tanks are full just as the 3 months are up and have to be emptied regardless of ground conditions or the forecast while some great weather has passed and no-one could spread.

The major slurry pollution incidents around here in the last 12 months have both been from AD plants on farms , yet it is still called farm pollution, its not its an industrial pollution incident.

No end of story's on Irish facebook sites just before the deadline for spreading slurry of farmers on ground that is far too wet and hence a lot of very near misses with tractors/ tankers etc

Sounds easy in theory,;) not so easy in practice:(

Without consulting the rules there are different rules for soil types and off the top of my head our circumstances mean our closed period ends something like Jan 15th.

How are they going to police it as EA staff will have to inspect every visit with WAG staff or they will have to be trained in it meaning routine inspections will take longer.

Have they thought it through including cost implications?
