Wholecrop bales

Just for when the thread is posted for next year asking if they're doable, yes is the answer! No holes in mine except when I reversed into a bale with the telehandler 🤦‍♂️

Going forward I’d want a line of lime around that to deter the rats because the colder it gets the more hungry they’ll be.
All the same credit where’s its due looks like a top job done so far
Thanks not a bad idea about the lime, we cut early tho and normally the grain is less like grain and more like cheese and they arent usually bothered with!

I hope it goes well, but from experience get them up off the ground
Thanks, my theory is, I'm feeding about 2 bales a week to some yearlings that were starting to eat their straw (cant afford that at £180/t delivered now! 😱😭🤢 ) so am giving them a wholecrop baling every few days, rats are lazy and would rather nibble at the open bale in the shed next door and sleep in the straw shed...

I'll let you know if it goes to plan. If you hear nothing it means I have a problem on my hands 😂😂😂

Used Rani repel for ours this year, supposedly detarant to vermin, just not to incompetence with a handler. Got several hundred for sale if anyone's short

Let me know how you get on with the wrap please! We looked into it but they would only go through a merchant and they were only willing to supply an entire pallet, whereas we wanted a couple of rolls to try first!

Jury is still out on the wrap, will see how it lasts the spring. We skimped and put four layers on quite a lot of it, as we were running low on wrap, that was a mistake.

Wholecrop for sale?

Slight change of plan so ended up about 150 bales too many. With where barley has gone price wise wish we had put the combine through it!

Any costings?
By my calculations a minimum of £20,000 for the panels and concrete, digging out would probably cost £10,000-£20,000 and then labour on top which again could be an easy £10,000 for a 60x30 pit.

It wouldnt work for us as we would waste far too much with secondary fermentation. If we opened our pit we would have to feed everything wholecrop and wholecrop only in order to clear the face fast enough, whereas we can currently feed 2-3 bales a week to whoever we want whenever we want

But think of the plastic not the capital 🙄

I agree pits are not cheap!

I’ve always liked the idea of a pit but seems just to much waste for me, maybe I’m wrong. What I really like the idea of is first cut then wholecrop then second or third on top of that with chopped beets in the middle somewhere. Saw it on Facebook the other day, maybe I’m wrong with that as well.

I did find a video on YouTube of someone making up and TMR in a wagon, feeding it out in a line and then a baler wrapper coming behind and re baling it. If I could find someone in this country who was doing that I’d be one happy chap.

Here it is
