Just re read this post, we haven't had the heat that England has had, it has been warm though 25/26 degrees. The forecast for the next 2 weeks is 17/18 degrees and showers/rain. Its raining here now.
I see , been like an oven here , baking everything,
Don't let it drop below 25% though as you are losing digestibility under that

Ok to update and revive this thread. Harvested crop through SPH fitted with a mill, grain was quite mature and split well through the mill, we wait to see the analysis. Was disappointed with the large amount of grass on it at the last. Contractor has done a super job of cutting it and there is minimal stubble left. I had initially jntended to sow it in grass now but have decided to put a winter crop in it instead so I can establish the grass earlier in the season next year. So what are we all thinking about sowing in it now? Have just sprayed with Glyphosate and am about to give it a heavy dose of Poultry litter. Am leaning towards trying Winter Wheat again as a wholecrop silage. What do you all think?

Can do wheat again if you want, no issue. Could do barley but then you run the risk of it getting stupid tall and falling over after getting it's feet into that poultry muck.

Spray the wheat with atlantis/hatra or broadway in the spring and it will remove all the grass from the crop.

Forage Rye , graze In the spring, then cut then reseed
from experience, never thought there was much in forage rye, our cows used to go up, when we moved onto grass. Humbolt
have been growing hybrid rye, which apparently is a much higher value feed, with vetches last year, and been cutting it green in may.
A lot depends on what you it feed to. We are dairy, and it feeds ok, we had trouble getting an accurate analysis of it, l think that might be the large stem to grain ratio.
marvellous for bulk feed, had up to 20 t/ac, but usually around 15, and been getting a decent crop of maize after it, then, its 30 t/ac

Can anyone comment on this silage analysis I had of winter barley wholecrop? It was cut beginning of June to ensile with 1st cut. The grains hadn’t filled much it was still pretty green, reason I cut it was that it was pretty dirty with grass and weeds, low lying field with water standing on a lot of it through winter and couldn’t spray it. The ME looks to high? Looking at it in the pit it’s just chopped straw.
