You will lose yield , shrivel upWhat do you mean 'fall away'?
Because of the heat or it maturing? Harvester man tells me its better to be just past milky stage and a little hard for the mill to work better, would this be true? You will lose yield , shrivel up
Yeah, slightly harder mills better, crop value won't disappear, bulk may reduce as it ripens but nutrition is still there.Because of the heat or it maturing? Harvester man tells me its better to be just past milky stage and a little hard for the mill to work better, would this be true?
Had two runs of stiffener. Also, if milling, absolutely no panic to cut that unless you're worried about it going down but doesn't look too strong.
Just re read this post, we haven't had the heat that England has had, it has been warm though 25/26 degrees. The forecast for the next 2 weeks is 17/18 degrees and showers/rain. Its raining here now.Looks ready to me , it will start to fall away in this heat if you don't cut it

Ok to update and revive this thread. Harvested crop through SPH fitted with a mill, grain was quite mature and split well through the mill, we wait to see the analysis. Was disappointed with the large amount of grass on it at the last. Contractor has done a super job of cutting it and there is minimal stubble left. I had initially jntended to sow it in grass now but have decided to put a winter crop in it instead so I can establish the grass earlier in the season next year. So what are we all thinking about sowing in it now? Have just sprayed with Glyphosate and am about to give it a heavy dose of Poultry litter. Am leaning towards trying Winter Wheat again as a wholecrop silage. What do you all think?
How early fo you graze and for how long?Forage Rye , graze In the spring, then cut then reseed
from experience, never thought there was much in forage rye, our cows used to go up, when we moved onto grass. HumboltForage Rye , graze In the spring, then cut then reseed
