How far off am I from cutting this undersown barley?

Cut plenty of wholecrop before but always through a SPFH, this is going in with a double chop and I want to be cautious that it the grains aren't too hard. Still very cheesy however.

You could cut that now but you won't have the maximum starch content yet.

You could have sprayed out that mouse eared chickweed for very little money and your new ley underneath would be clean as a whistle.

I’ve just read this thread right through now we’ve got it ready to harvest. Do we put it straight though the chopper ( wholecrop header) and MILL or not. Or at what stage do we mill

I would cut that this week. You don't want to miss the dry weather and be making a mess with a double chop when the rain starts.

Personally we would always mill it for cows, even at middle cheese stage. First year we tried wholecrop we chopped it at soft cheese and saw whole grains all winter on the floor in the parlour where we hosed down. Processor in from then on and never had the same problem again. The more surface area the intestinal bugs/enzymes have to go at the more nutritional value you get for the same financial input.

Get on and cut it this week if with a double chop.

Would like to see some photos uploaded of your double chop working in the crop too please!!

you have wheat seed ordered, plough in the broiler litter, spread evenly at max 4 ton/ac and no more than 1 bag 27N/ac on emergence. Wholecrop Harvest when grain cheesey ripe, do use some fungicide to keep clean and maximise grain/energy yield. Put in silo in layer with grass silage - watch out for rats, they love wholecrop, DONT round bale silage it--rats destroy it.
we made that mistake with whole crop, Vermin literally shredded the bales, we had to use them, as did our neighbour, both of us had a job to shift the quick enough.
Neither of us could believe the speed the barstewards, shredded the bales, they were all gone within 3 weeks of baling, a complete and utter waste of money.

good job we didn't store them at the farm.
l never ever thought it was possible to destroy a heap of bales, so quickly, good job it was only 8 light acres, 40 odd bales.
but l know not to do it again !
