Would you need much weed control for whole crop?If you put peas in you will make your weed control problematic so not an ideal 'cleaning crop'.
Would you need much weed control for whole crop?
I had to look up what Bere was. So its a very specific grain to your area?I grow peas, oats and some bere wholecrop. Organic so muck only with a bit of polysulphate and gafsa if I have any left over. Last year I did 50% peas / 50% oats/barley, this year similar. Looking at a rate of 200kg/ha. I re-seed at the same time with clover / herbal mix. The peas are 30% organic, 30% commercial (ESO / KWS MANAGER). Oats is Delfin. Bere is my own home saved grain. Bere works very well for us because it grows very tall (sometimes taller than the oats) as it doesn't need much Nitrogen. The peas use the Bere to climb.
Yes, my Dad obtained some seed quite a few years ago and we've grown it every few years for seed / feed. It's a 6 row ancient grain. We sow it in May and it grows and ripens quickly for our part of the world. It's usually the first thing we harvest. It's not a heavy yield compared to modern barley but it'll grow in low nutrient and more acidic soil without too much bother. As well as the wholecrop, we'll probably grow about 10 acres for seed this year. It's bad for lodging so we don't give it anything extra. I'm told the straw is desirable for thatching.I had to look up what Bere was. So its a very specific grain to your area?
I’ve got some muscani in for whole crop this year. DD’d into wheat stubble august last year. Had muck on it in the autumn but other than that no inputs apart from a silica spray this spring. Put vetch in with it, got hammered by weevils so probably won’t bother again. When you say 15 bales is that rounds or quads? What do you reckon it’s worth/tonne? Thanksi grow muscanis for wholecrop as well as combinable , first time last year yeilded 15 bales to a acre and is feeding well did add peas and vetch but half didnt come up and i killed by trying to get a handle on the weeds before it swamped it , this year drilled it this autumn again with muscani on its own, meaning i can pre em it for bg reasons crop loooks to have come through winter well wont get alot spent on it now a sniff off herbicide and a dash of N will do
