Who's at the national this year ?

Well, I managed to make my usual mess, though this time I managed to start the process on Thursday by falling out of the caravan with the help of the stiff breeze blowing at the time! Organisation seemed ok, no one area had provided the majority of judges that I saw and the fact that there are so many of them on each class makes the regular complaints of bias difficult to reconcile with events. The cry for younger judges will fall on deaf ears, no one has any respect now for judges who are not ploughmen, so the effect is to ensure judges are retired ploughmen, and that means old! In any case, how will a young judge have gained the knowledge to be able to carry out the task? There seem to be a few "headland experts" posting here, to them I will say, get out on the plots, get your boots muddy and you will find out things are much different than first headland views lead you to believe.

No good replying to anything you write on here Ley 253 your another one that has been brain washed
Mmmm , none as blind as them who will not see. Nothing is perfect, but it was noticeable how the meeting in Stafford didnt get off the ground. However much you dislike it, over two hundred found the event acceptable, so the SOP is not doing that bad a job. Contrary to your beliefs, there are things that I dont like, the fact that there is no recognised standard against which work can be judged is one. Another is that one seminar seems to qualify a man to be a judge, it doesnt! Three may, coupled with a spell of working with an established judge.

I was there with my husband and he told me they have a secretary in the office full tjme surely this cannot be true for a two day ploughing match
I think you would find that there is much more to it than just the national. Qualifiers, world ploughing people and sponsors to liaise with etc.

...well I enjoyed my couple of days ploughing anyway! (Well I say enjoyed, that’s if you like freezing your nuts of pee wet through in a stubble field for several hours!). Thought I’d done ok on Sunday, but wasn’t in the top 4. The weather certainly put people off and the trade stands were minimal. Cheshire and Brailsford ploughing matches put it to shame, but they have become quite commercially focussed (especially Cheshire!). I shan’t moan about the SOP as I’m not really prepared to put anything into it, but remain happy to take part in the match.

My fault meeting in Stafford didn't take place, due to major family problems at home. In the plough off judge b was put in to make sure they got the two winners they wanted, saturday nigel vickers was a country mile in front of every body and Chappell wasn't top 5 , but he still won it. I was told on thursday who was going to the worlds and europeans but didn't believe them, if I'd have listenedwhould have stopped at home, reminds me of marden first time round when colin bowen and ashley boyles clearly won the plough off but didn't get it , the whole job stinks if you ask me. :scratchhead::scratchhead::scratchhead:

Judge b did you as well 6 for accuracy of final furrow other judge gave 13, what a joke how can it alter 7 marks from one end to the other, he did a job on billy purkiss as well should never be allowed to judge a national again, talk about match fixing.

Colin Bowen didn't go straight once across the field at Marden so how could he win?

It alters so much because there is no standard to compare it with, its still a matter of personal opinion, and thats just not good enough. One seminar is not enough, there should be several and then a period of judging in tandem with an experienced man, who would sign the newcomer off when he was deemed competent. There was the same at last years event, 17 at one end, and 8 at the other, I know the ends were nowhere near the same, one being on the flat, the other a steep slope, but really!

Were your glasses steamed up on Sunday. It was only between Witty and Chappell for first and Reversible the only question was which order it would be the top three were a good bit in front of the rest

May be not quite such a difference, but the front furrow falls away about halfway down, and one end is straight, the other is anything but.
Does the reversable not have at least four judges, if they do, then one mans input would have minimal effect in any attempt to fix anything.
