And last 45 acre will lift end feb , and go in spring barley it’s blowing sand , wheat no good runs out of steam and will irrigate barley in may if dry , field am in now is not pretty down to 4/5 k , 25 acre tonight , headlands ploughed in morning , and then try and get 8 acre beans in to part of another tofinish field . Then pheasant training day Saturday , so no field work allowed

Rightly or wrongly I've been drilling this week on our most forgiving land. Used the Claydon as it's much quicker than plough/combi and I'm not flush with staff! Hoping to get some rolled today.
I think I would be more inclined to plant spring barley after January here. Got to plant some beans at some point too...View attachment 847131

Neighbour around here put some wheat in when it was less than ideal, it went in well and he managed to roll it, reckon it’s the best looking wheat around here at mo apart from the wheel marks from the roll tractor every 6m, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I spent last weekend in the Stevenage area (family wedding!), so had a good look at an area from about 10 miles SW of Hitchin, through Baldock to just east of Buntingford. I was amazed at how free from waterlogging the fields were, and how much field work has been done, compared with Lincolnshire. Many fields ploughed, many fields of emerged wheat, and maize stubbles looking level and smooth with not a single wheel rut. Did not see any standing water. Driving around here you can always see a couple of fields on each side with standing water and/or serious rutting!

I think there is a town around there called “Sandy”. Not, for no reason.

The most satisfying rolling I have ever done was for a farmer with a little Track Marshal

Has anyone rolled on the frost? I walked some this morn that had been drilled and reckon it may have gone.
Also drilled in the frost this morning and must say it did go in very well, no soil stuck to the coulters. Will be getting up early doors tomorrow.

You must be chuffed to be making progress. Claydons clearly work well in the wet judging by your and others evidence. However every time I see a pic I can’t believe how much soil they move. Not a criticism, just an observation.

They seem a very good drill and seem to work very well on lightish land in the wet as per all these pics, neighbour tried his the other week in some snotty stuff the other side of the hedge and just cut a load of 4 inch deep slots with no tilth so had to give up

The tines can smear at depth in wet clay and you need a beefy tractor to pull one. They certainly do move a fair bit of soil, especially in stony ground. That said, there's a few inches of undisturbed ground between each row that has a bit of soil thrown on top by the tines if you're doing a reasonable speed >8 kph

Too damp to do anymore ploughing here. Stopped me yesterday morning after the frost dissapeared.
quite a bit of rain forecast for the west, which will test some of this December sown stuff as it won’t germinate quickly enough.

Just finished patching up what wheat we did in October, ahead of tonight's rain.

Hopefully, this will give it all time to be visibly coming up, or not as the case may be, in time for its third chance ahead of the next deadline - end of January.

edit:- sod's law - unfortunately, all six varieties we have in heaps here now turn out to have an HGCA "End Jan" rather than anything slightly later.
