Why are second hand rubber tracked crawlers so cheap?

When I was in Sudan the people we ran farms for had run a large contracting business cleaning ditches and canals as well as land preparation. They ran about 25 Challenger 65's which they ran until they died usually at around 30-35,000 hours they were very clever when it came to keeping them running using truck tyres as the drive wheels and removing all the glass when the air con stopped etc.View attachment 924696View attachment 924697
Still nothing goes on forever.
Off topic.
We’re there many Cat D8/7 and 6 in the same scrap yard, real crawlers.
I may be incorrect but I wonder if the Caterpillar D8/7 and 6 , have cleared more land for agriculture than any other tractors have or ever lightly to in the forseable future, and I am talking world wide.

No their day was long gone as the land clearing canal building had been done much earlier.

Is the company stil in business. What do they run now?
The company Dal Agriculture is very much in business the contracting side died as much of the work was for government and the government ran out of money so the Challengers etc were not renewed but ran til they died. The Dal group is massive owning Africa’s largest flour mill Sayga. They are the CAT agents Mercedes, Mitsubishi,
amongst others they diversified into farming and dairy as well as being the sole producer of Coca Cola in Sudan. The boss Osama Latif was at one point the richest black man in Africa but I think there are a lot of dodgy politicians with more money stashed away.

I imagine the tracks would be expensive to replace. How long do they last? What else adds to running costs? I used to hear stories about expensive transmission faults in the early days but have these not been worked through or ironed out?

With 8000 hours on the clock at say £29,000 they are half the price of a decent used loader tractor here.
And you'd expect crawlers to spend their hours doing long days in big fields then serviced and back in the shed for 95% of the year. Not thrashed on the roads or stop-start yard work every day which is hard on machines

He's a clever man, works on just about anything and takes on some big projects.
I think a lot of the breakdowns he goes to are caused by bad operators, they seem pretty wild up there.
