Hybridity (right word?) only lasts for one generation so the next generation is still oilseed rape which will grow as per normal but not the same variety, in fact not a known variety hence can't be 'grown'

Flat10 has it correct, I am not a geneticist so it isn't as simple as it reverting back to the parents but it certainly isn't going to reproduce another 'hybrid equivalent' crop and yes it is illegal.

but do we really need that to be LAW ?

Yes, because farmers know nothing about their own land or best practise, and happily throw their fert in ditches; chemicals down drains; impale all wildilfe on rusty spikes; purposefully wait until the wettest day to lift their root crops; would happily plant seeds which could revert to a random parent variety etc.

Or perhaps we desperately, desperately, need to find temporary jobs in the public sector (paid for by modulating these farmer's free money for doing nothing) for a whole generation of otherwise jobless 20-somethings with arts degrees and little grasp of long division.

will reply properly later, found a few old cans of DDT I need to loose down a drain before I go out with my pitchfork to murder a few lapwings :)

Maybe best to close down my home GM lab - learnt all about how to mutate wheat genes on 'tinternet last year and have been growing 20t/ha this time with no inputs - trouble it the grains look a bit like fish ??

It's a good job we have laws to protect us from ourselves isn't it

I don't have anything to do with the "seed" side of things. But surely if you don't like the price, don't buy it! You knew you couldn't farm save it when you planted it last year so what's your problem?

Why is the legalities of this an issue ??
Why would any one want to hss a hybrid and have no guarantee of the outcome of the crop, isn't the law just protecting people like the op from having a variable or poor outcome with the next years crop.

Growing conventionals and home saving them (paying the royalties of course) would be the logical outcome of any dissatisfaction with the cost of hybrid seed and potentially dodgy hss hy

my point is do we really need it to be LAW though ?
