Why deadweight

With the abattoirs currently trying to pull prices back and the live selling buoyant why do so many drive past a livestock market to go to an abattoir ?
Is it due to costs or habit ......

There are 2 good auction markets within 6 miles of us so we are lucky.

Do you ever wonder why they offer dead weight in the beginning do you think it’s Cos they are kind hearted souls that understand your too busy to market your produce

That can defiantly be the case. some will win every week and some will loose every week.
I sell mule and hill lambs dead while the better shape continentals and Suffolk's go live, sometimes on the same day.

I’ll stand corrected but I would say 100% of your angus store cattle will end up going deadweight...

Or I could continue with my low input business model and look for the best way to market my stock for my personal circumstances.

I'm not farming for anyone else's benefit. Only mine.

it’s up to who ever buys them off me at the mart to do as they wish , everything I sell goes live

Then sell live because pandering to dead weight surprises the price for you as well , send them to long town anything sellls their

There's pros and cons for both ---it's an age old argument which will be done to death yet again i guess

For me (and it's not everyone's priority) although i use stock markets on occasion i think they are a poor option because;
1) Animal welfare---They extend times animals are in transit/loadings & unloadings /wait around on their way to an abattoir
2) Disease control---every place that animals gather from many different farms and then sometimes disperse from again means an opportunity to spread disease---scab/MV etc

On the plus side they provide good social points for farmers and some do a cracking breakfast

Their is I have sold odd fat heifer under thirty month live and they sell well.

Not around here, and thats 3/4 prime marts, they would be given away.
I like the Angus but would never sell one live

The argument we need both is bull sh!t , they have for you all in a position you thjnk you need both and use one to play the other off , they play farmers like a fiddle because they know your shyt at marketing
