Don't remember being told that - remember the SNP's assurances that an Independent Scotland WOULD be able to stay in Europe despite Europe's clear reluctance to allow it.
I remember too that it was likely that things would soon come to the crunch as to whether Britain as a whole stayed in Europe - though the powers-that-be were so sure any vote would be Remain, that it wasn't properly discussed.
i can also remember Farage trying to give a talk up here and being driven out by a thuggish mob, seemingly with SNP support, as a racist. I thought at the time that that was a bit disturbing, that mob rule was allowed to take over in this way, even if he was a racist; really he should be allowed to put his arguments forward so that in this democracy, they could be countered. I didn't realise, not having heard him speak for himself, either in person or in the media, that his agenda was not actually racist and worthy of discussion for its own sake.
The propaganda and manipulation surrounding Indyref was shameful - but it was far from one sided.
Ironically, though, I suspect that if Westminster did suggest that the only way to stay in the EU was to vote to stay in Britain, it was not being deceitful - it had no idea - none of the establishment seemed to have any idea - that Brexit was on the cards.

That's only one case.they seem happy for another Scottish ref don't they
a big case thoughThat's only one case.
what if England, Wales and NI left the UK then Scotland would be the UK and could carry on in the EU only difference it would be smallerVery different though in that Ireland is already a member - it would need to completely swallow Northern Ireland, but given that, there is nothing more to negotiate; one of the members has just got bigger, that's all. Scotland would be a newly independent country and a new entrant with everything to negotiate and not a huge amount to put in the kitty; therefore probably not too welcome, even if it's people wanted it.
be ok but it wouldn't be an independent Scotland as they would have to call it the UKShhh! @Henarar! You don't know who reads these threads! Someone might get ideas!
I think Scotland will be very welcome into EFTA or the EU.Very different though in that Ireland is already a member - it would need to completely swallow Northern Ireland, but given that, there is nothing more to negotiate; one of the members has just got bigger, that's all. The international community will decide whether they treat an independent Scotland as a successor state to the UK.It might be easier for the EU to go down that route than to strip Scots of their EU citizenship.what if England, Wales and NI left the UK then Scotland would be the UK and could carry on in the EU only difference it would be smaller

Not so much with Spain having dropped it's objection, and Scotland already having decades of experience being a member within the UK. Be a fairly seamless process I'd imagine.
Do you both really, really believe what you have posted?
You must have seen what Merkel said on Thursday. She, the rest of her German citizens, and all the others out there are of one mind - punish the UK for having defeated us so many times in war, and having the audacity to decide not to be one of us.
Do you really believe they will welcome Scotland as an independent nation to be yet another blood sucking attachment? Scotland cannot be a net subscriber, so it would have to be a net receiver of EU funds. My heart's in the Highlands, but that is not a reason to believe that Scotland has any possible chance of economic success outside the rUK. Neither is there any possibility of Scotland becoming a member of the EU in its own right.
I want to end my days north of the Highland line, but the sheer stupidity of thinking of Independence at this time, and the idea of remaining in the EU is very despairing. I am an optimist by nature, and not one given to emotions, but the present situation of independence at all costs causes me great anguish. My wife and I truly worry that returning for our demise is not going to be a sensible option............ for fair as these green foreign hills may be, they are not the hills of home.
Merkel was not talking about Afghanistan, she was talking about the UK. Why did you mention Afghanistan?
I believe you are as deluded as the SNP if you think that the remaining 27 members of the EU would welcome Scotland with open arms.
Please tell me why you think they would.
You brought up the war so I thought we could throw in any ould shite to make n argumen
Seems Scotland constantly gets a good bashing on here.
