Why do you interact with your vet

Hello,

If anybody would be able to spare 5 minutes to fill out my dissertation questionnaire that would be fantastic. I am looking at the reasons why sheep farmers and vets interact and where there is a barrier.

If you are solely a sheep farmer or have a sheep enterprise on the side, I would be very grateful for your input.

Many thanks.

I'm curious to know why sheep farmers would be so drastically different to any other livestock farmer, mixed or otherwise?
Because sheep only farms may not have had a vet out for years where as cattle farms will see a vet regularly so a mixed farm the vet is used for sheep advice aswell as cattle..
I had this conversation with someone the other day who gets vets out quite a bit for their sheep to pull a lamb

How can a sheep farm that has not seen a Vet on farm, get AB's and other drugs??

My vets come out maybe once during lambing most years, do our MV blood tests and that's about it. However they always take the time to discuss with me what I am requesting for my wee flock. They answer questions and offer suggestions. They also regularly speak to me when we meet outside of their practise.
I in turn buy as many of the supplies I need from them as possible. Yep it costs a wee bit more but they don't rip me off. The 'free' consult's are worth the extra on supplies.
I would be loathe to change my vets, they are knowledgeable, competent, courteous, and friendly.
I went in the other day and they asked about lambing, I said it was over and the vet said he was pleased I didn't need them. We then spent 10 minutes discussing the merits of selecting terminal sires on maternal traits. They made £4 in that time providing me with a few syringes and needles.
I like my vets.

Cornish spell it "Dreckly" ;)

Zo du I gen'rally, but when among the English ...

I would've done it yesterday, but at the Vet's the receptionist had to look up when I last talked to a Vet (recently as it happens, to have the herd and flock health plans signed off) before writing everything I needed down on a special pad to show the Vet who then came out and quizzed me about my abilities, before dispensing my stock's prescription - which took more time than I could spare at the time. The time before was worse - the duty Vet was downright patronising.

There's seldom a long-serving Vet who knows me there nowadays. Other staff chop and change all the time and don't know t'other client from which, let alone study where anyone is. My family has been with that practice for 3 generations. We're thinking of changing because it's too arm's length from their side now, although they're "naice", it's too much like the supermarket. A retail operator's welcome that's heartsinkingly superficial, but dressed up as professional.

They've got to pull their socks up and as individuals be prepared to put down roots.
