Why have separate store and fat sales for Lambs ?

Why not weigh them all and sell them in the same sale ?
particularly thinking of smaller sheep markets
there would be farmers around then to pick up anything fat that's under-priced
keep hearing on here about under finished lambs in the fat and lambs that are fit to kill in the stores why not put them all together ?

So the markets can pass on mlc levy costs to the fat sellers

Beause of wot he said. There is an MLC levy (Lord knows what they do with it) on fat stock. None on stores.
And.......................?
all the buyers would know that if they sent them on to slaughter they would have to pay the levy and could account for it, its not unheard of for fat buyers to buy out the store sale now so that argument don't stack up

dealers would not want to hang around a lot more time on that day watching store lambs sold in between fat, it would make lots more work for auction company due to pens needed to hold more stock and loading unloading would be a nightmare, , and how many farmers are going to buy poor fat lambs to bring them back in few weeks for little or less than costs to feed them, many of the poor so called finished fat lambs will not get much if any better, due to the breed/ etc,
this would not be good for either party buyers and sellers alike,

If you buy stores in the fat ring, there's no MLC.

The lambs killed from store ring, MLC is paid when killed.

The system is there and works already.
Not in South Wales anything sold in fat ring ewes or lambs are hit with the mlc levy and rebated to the buyer to then stand the cost when charged at slaughter house
Must be different up your way
Local store sale is a fixed cost per lamb

This will then distort average fat prices around the country and maybe be why there’s so much variation in daily markets averages if the two are not defined??

just sell the lot on the same system as stores are now, if buyers haven't got enough about them to pay a bit less to cover the levy then perhaps they are not up to the job
