Why I hate electrics

Not sure if I'm missing something obvious or this is just the black magic that is electric having a laugh at me.
Spent yesterday afternoon trying to sort out the 3rd sevice on the old loader tractor, got as far as replacing most of the botched and corroded wiring as far as the 7 pin plug which happened to no longer have an earth from it so drilled a nice shiny hole in the mounting plate on the bracket, scraped the paint off and used a tex screw to attach the eye of the earth (nice and neat+barely noticeable I'm thinking.) Put my tester into the circuit and barely getting 5 volts, so out of curiosity I put my tester to the edge of the exact same plate which is 3 inches away from the hole and screw earth I made and instantly getting a good 12 volts? Move the tester back to the shiny hole and back to to 5 volts again? What on earth am I missing as it is the same flipping piece of metal? Of is this just the dark arts trying to p**s me off?
Apologies for the long post, but never been very good at explaining without doing it in a long-winded way

I would check the other end of the earth. If you exclude things like poor contacts with the meter etc then the only reason I can see is if 7volts (5v+7v=12v) is coming down the earth. This is picked up near the new tek screw but not as much further away. Check the earth wire copper hasn't gone black under its insulation too As this could cause a bad connection.

other than that I have no clue and will be interested to see others reply.

I would get a good auto-electrician!

Spent ages trying to sort out a fault in my tractor, then got the above in who sorted it in an hour. Cost me £80 but I regained my sanity. Never again will I become strangled in the electrical wiring of any vehicle! Life is too short!

New piece of wire for the earth from the 7 pin plug, the only change is where I earth to :scratchhead:
If I put the tester from the positive in the 7 pin to the drilled hole I still get 5 volts, put it to the edge and I get 12, it's bizarre as it's 2 shiny bits of the same plate :banghead:

Would dearly love to but isn't worth it as I only want to put the grab on to clean 1 blooming shed out, and I think they would have a heart attack at the bodges others have done on the rest of the tractor

Try removing your new earth from the loader and see what your meter says from pin to plate. Also see if there's a voltage/ ohms continuity from new earth to tractor battery earth

Well after spending too much time chasing bad joins in the power yesterday, I gave up with the close by earth and ran another wire back into the cab to an easily accessible earth point

We have a JD6400 that was always a bad and sluggish starter from new. Always looked like a dodgy earth so cleaned ever connection esp where battery strap connected to engine block. No improvement so shifted earth to a nearby bolt on block and vastly improved starting. Could never figure out what the difference was in a few inches!

While i was a youngster in the raf i rewired a old david brown tractor when i reconnected the battery it burst into life in more ways i thought possible. The fire section were impressed with my skills but not so my line sergeant my jankers was spent painting running and jumping.
