Hi guys and girls!
Brand new to this forum - it's absolutely fantastic.

I want my first thread to be optimistic!

Why do you think farming is the best profession in the world?

I vote for the beautiful British countryside all day long...

Basically it's because everybody, from the most wealthy and powerful to the most humble has to eat (at least once a day and preferably two or three times a day) and without farmers the whole world would be in a very sticky situation - "making two heads of corn grow where once only one did" and all that.
To be a part of that is very satisfying even if it's not the most financially rewarding.

I've seen 'a few' cattle, sheep and pigs born in my time and I still get 'a bit of a buzz' from leaning on a gate and watching a new life come into the world:)

Best job in the world really and 'though a lot of us on here moan and groan about all sorts of stuff, deep down ,we wouldn't swap it for anything else.

The constant challenge is the kicker for me. I tire of things quickly after I master them, "there's always a little more toothpaste in the tube" when it comes to farming. New tricks, new methods, making things work that shouldn't.. plus all the other points mentioned above.
I also like this forum to learn how other farmers around the world are playing the hands they're dealt. I look at pictures of the UK and it probably appeals just as much as my pictures of NZ do, and we're all doing it to feed people who think food comes from packets...[emoji38]

Every day is different, the eternal challenge to get it all right one day, the wildlife, the colours throughout the year, the space, the friends.
And we all know being a farmer means we can also: moan like hell, park where we like, be grumpy and play the village straw chewing idiot at posh London dinner parties.

Speaking as someone who has spent time away from farming and come back to it I think that it is more a lifestyle than a job and anyone who can spend their life doing what they love is truly lucky.
Personally I found that working in an office under artificial light and air con, despite the actual work being interesting and the money being far better, just sucked the joy out of life!

As for what I love about it I guess it is the general satisfaction that goes with physical work and seeing animals and crops grow and flourish under my care plus the challenge of learning new skills and always trying to improve and refine the system.

Personally i enjoy improving my lot. I'm sure we've all been there at some point when someone passes comment on that nice new fence you've put up...Well i'm at the stage where people make comment about the one that you haven't:). The biggest buzz i got recently was from a neighbor that has farmed here all his 60 odd years. He said "imagine what your grandfather would say if he could see it now". The amount of comments we get from all sorts of people (gravel truck operator to the local stock and station agent) about how much of a credit the farm is too us is humbling. And yet , everyday i get up and think what can i fix/ improve....I think farming is a disease:) and one that i am happy to suffer from;)

Bringing new life in to the world

Living in a beautiful environment with the seasons, the weather and nature

A timeless and noble vocation, sadly much under-rated by the urban world

I also think its about identity, in company, if someone asked you what you do and you say a farmer, people may not be able to relate to it but they are interested and know what you do whereas if you say 'i'm a process analyst' or a 'project manager' wtf does it all mean? you are a nobody. Being a farmer you are somebody who does something.

Not saying I am vain and pander for approval, just that I value the identity that I have from being a farmer - its unique. there is also nothing more rewarding for the soul than breeding and rearing livestock.
