World population is currently doubling in less than a human lifetime, when my young children's are reaching retirement the global population is due to be double what it is today.

No it won't be. World population is predicted to peak at around 11bn, roughly 50% more than today, at around the end of the current century. After that it starts to decline. As populations become wealthier they have less children, this is already happening in Asia as its wealth grows. The main driver of world population growth will be Africa for the next 50 years, mainly due to their inability to grow their economies and get wealthier.

Perhaps. For that to be true however it assumes populations are getting more wealthy and I am not convinced that is universally occurring. The benefits of economic growth are being focused to benefit a narrowing band of super elite either though poor government policy or corruption. The average teacher, nurse or police officer in the UK is in many terms less well off now than 10 years ago. It is actually a lack of wealth that discourages many UK middle income families from having more children!

Ironically it turns out that wealthy American women are now bucking the trend for increased wealth reducing birthrate and are actually having more children now, its the middle income families where the birth rates are falling!
