Why isn’t air travel restricted?

I haven’t understood this since day one of the outbreak.
Locking down cities and now homes yet allowing international travel of possibly asymptomatic carriers seems to contradict the reasoning behind social distancing and the way it can reduce spread.
And yet even now air travel is unlimited here. There is no mandatory or properly organised quarantine for incomers here and it’s impossible to rely on voluntary self isolation.
We are crippling our economy trying to slow the spread internally yet it can still be seeded by arrivals from abroad.
The whole thing seems balmy to me but what do I know. I am not anti foreigner or anything like that.
Can somebody explain it?

And just to add, I don’t see the chinese letting it rip or going for herd immunity. They seem to be trying to eradicate it. The overall strategy here seems belated, half hearted and confused, sorry to say. We lost at least a couple of months watching it flow into the country. Can’t believe we were so casual about national biosecurity to be honest.

Herd Immunity, its all about protecting the NHS . Not about saving lives , they did not change policy , just the wording , thats why they built the biggest hospital in the world rather than pushing testing which would be a massive help in Counties that only have a few casses

Seems bloody ridiculous after all the fuss made when bringing back the cruise ship people.
That’s right. It seems entirely inconsistent. If air travel isn’t restricted then why weren’t the cruise ship passengers allowed to disembark here and go their merry way like tens of thousands of foreign air passengers have done since new year. We had Chinese tourists here mid January with it. How did they get visas to visit when we now need a valid reason to leave the house. And later every case here was “somebody returning from Italy” weeks after we knew it was rife there, yet the government and WHO say don’t restrict air travel. They are useless in my view.

The redundant planes are still piling up at Bournemouth Airport. They are starting to line up 747s now. I read yesterday that flights are down 95% on last year and most are almost empty, so not sure who is still flying.

There are very few flights we are sending veg via charter freighters. The pilots cannot leave the planes and are isolated on return. The last passenger flights into Kenya were about 10 days ago and anyone on those flights was compulsory quarantined. Look in the sky there are no vapour trails. Oh and today i was told don't harvest because the supermarkets don't need anything because people have enough.

they did quarantine the ones they brought back from china before it all kicked off here
there is no big deal now really as long as those coming in abide by the same rules as us
the time for shutting down air travel was weeks ago and I am afraid that horse has already bolted

A friend finally has his Son coming back from Peru.

Many are following Raab's advice to get their loved ones home whilst commercial flights are still possible

Now you can argue that all incoming passengers need isolating and testing ..........

My worry is that however careful we are internally then as restrictions are lifted new cases will start coming again from areas badly afflicted.
It would also show some goodwill and solidarity and consistency of approach if the same rules applied to external as internal travel.

I can’t see a problem with movement of freight and goods. If people do have to come in by air then surely they should undertake 2 weeks compulsory quarantine otherwise we are just peeing in the sea with internal restrictions.

I don’t have a problem with residents returning properly tested and quarantined. That’s only to be expected. But Chinese tourists were here in Lincoln mid January. Not their fault but I find our entry requirements to be shockingly slack. The Chinese are now restricting entry to foreigners. Seems common sense.

Are planes still flying in...?!
Neighbour is head of microbiology at local hospital and his son is awaiting to fly back from America any day. You'd think they would know better.

Personally air transport for passengers should be banned worldwide until after the last case of CV. Medical supplies should be the only allowable cargo by air now.

My kids could have come home to Kenya last week however they would have had to be quarantined in either a hospital or hotel at their (my) expense previously they could come but had to self isolate which meant we all would have had to stay away from the farm for two weeks which i cannot afford. So they are in England caring for their mental 80 year old granddad and having to grow up quick.
